New life for old mascara

Do you have any dried-out tubes of mascara you’re ready to toss? Get a few more weeks of use out of them with this handy little trick.

Remove wand from tube and fill tube with water. Dump it out and shake a few times to get the excess out. Pump the wand a few times and wala! Good as new. (Only there isn’t as much as new, obviously.)

I’ve been known to do this a few times with the same tube of mascara, making them last weeks longer than they otherwise would have. Money in my pocket, baby.

Have any other frugal makeup tips or tricks? Feel free to leave them in the comments.

  1. Loving this idea…must attempt as current tube of mascara is one big glob of goo.

Great! Mascara was on my list!

My trick: when the bronzer dumps out in the make-up bag, just apply brush directly to the bag and onto the face. That’ll save clean up time AND money!

I honestly wouldn’t recommend this. While it seems like a great idea to save money, the preservative system used in most mascara will not stand up to adding additional water to it. Preservative systems are normally only effective enough to preserve the original formula. A compromised preservative system can lead to infections of the eye and possibly even loss of vision – much more expensive than a new tube of mascara.
