For the past few years I’ve been complaining about my skin and my nails, and I’ve spent more time and money than I care to count trying different products to combat my weak, peeling nails and dry, rough skin. In fact, the history of my quest for healthier hair, skin and nails is well documented in the archives here at Chic Critique.
I’ve complained to my mom over the past few years, and she always told me to consider my diet. She pointed out that what you put IN your body is even more important than what you put ON it, and your skin and nails (and hair) are usually the first to show signs of malnutrition. It’s not that I didn’t believe that, but I thought I had a decent diet and I could never remember to take a multi-vitamin. So I kept trying products, hoping to find a miracle cure, and put my mom’s admonitions in the back of my mind.
Then I began researching whole foods, and I discovered the benefits of Cod Liver Oil. I decided to try it, hoping that it would help my mood and to prevent osteoporosis, which runs in my family. To be sure I would take it consistently, I put it with my thyroid and gastritis meds in one of those weekly medication organizers like my grandma always used.
My moods actually HAVE been better, but the real surprise came in my nails and skin. My nails are suddenly growing like weeds, and they’ve stopped splitting for the most part. My skin is looking better too. I can’t think of anything else that I’m doing that would make such a dramatic difference.
Perhaps when Old Man Winter comes to town and the dry chilly air takes its toll on my body (and my moods), I’ll have to eat my words. But for now, I’m taking my Cod Liver Oil religiously. I’d love to know if anyone else has tried it with such remarkable results.

Great information. Your last few posts regarding real food have gotten me thinking and evaluating our pantry. I’ve read the link on cod liver oil and have a question. Is there a brand that you recommend or have been pleased with? Also, is the 10,000 IU of Vitamin A a pretty standard dose for adults, or should I continue reading for this info.
Thanks for sharing!

Heather, I got Nordic Naturals from my local whole foods. There are some recommended brands and dosages in that article, or at least on that site. I think those are pretty high, and I take about half what they recommend, b/c I’m trying to conserve the pills. Also, come wintertime, when there’s less Vit D, I may increase the dosage somewhat.
Hope that helps!!
the best cod liver oil is fermented versions and not the typical hight street version which is heated and processed. and left with very little nutrients. http://www.greenpasture.org
Also its vitamin D3 you want not D2 which comes from plants. The body treats them totally different!!
Used it years ago when I lived in UK .would buy Codliver oil and malt in jars from Boots the Chemist .Wonderful .Also used to give to my dog and her coat wa super
I now live in Berlin where water is so hard and not kind to fair hair and skin so am back on it , IA friends mother got me a couple of jars . Personally , I think its great and consider ——– if it doesn’t do as much as you would hope for ,it certainly wont do the harm many of the chemicals do which we use daily on our skin and at great cost …….
