Project Runway Recap: The Finale!

Yes.  Finally.  It is here.

After last week’s sneak peek of the designer’s collections, the suspense of who would be taking home the grand prize was building.  Up for grabs?  A chance to sell their collection in select Neiman Marcus stores and on NeimanMarcus.com, a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine, a one-year position as guest editor of the mag, Brother sewing equipment, $100,000 in technology and office supplies from HP and Intel, and $100,000 cash.

The episode begins with the boys getting ready for their final runway show.  Getting ready includes a teary-eyed  interview from Mondo while Austin prances around with curlers in his hair.  All three are slightly bouncing around with excitement and nervousness.

Backstage things unravel slightly as Michael discovers a slight problem with one of his garments and Austin discovers he might have bit off more than he can chew.  Mondo gets a complimentary lint rolling from Joanna which I think makes us all a bit squeamish.

To the Runway!

[spoiler alert]

The show opens with a stiff, over-practiced speech from Angela Lindvall before the final judging panel is introduced.  Season regulars Issac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman are joined by Tommy Hilfiger and the fashion director of Neiman Marcus, Ken Downing.

Austin is up first, to showcase his collection selflessly named ‘Austin Scarlett’.  After the initial discussions about his vision, I was surprised to see such modern touches in his collection.  I loved the use of lace and leather, but the floral ball gown just didn’t seem to fit the model correctly.

Mondo takes the stage next, with his collection ‘Therapy’.  The shirt in his opening look and the comedic play on the Rorschach ink prints were brilliant. Though his collection was primarily black and white, the interplay of patterns kept it modern and quirky.

Michael closes the show with his safari resort wear line ‘ Serengeti’, which ends up being my absolute favorite.  Mainly because I could see myself and others wearing these pieces in everyday life.  The white flowing dress looks divine, perfect for a vacation in the Mediterranean.

Judging becomes a long-drawn out portion of the show…as a montage of past challenges is shown and Joanna shows up at the last minute to cast her vote.  There is a slight surprise – there are no losers!  Only two people who didn’t win.  Angela reveals that the two runner-ups will be sent on a high-end trip to Paris to soothe their second and third place woes.

But who will be heading the airport?  And who will be headed to work at Marie Claire?

Michael is the first to get his heart broken – the judges loved his collection.  Ken even exclaimed that he could place it on the floor of Neiman Marcus tomorrow and it would have record sales.  His collection just didn’t top the others.

Things quickly progress from there as she announces that the winner is MONDO!  No surprise there.  He’s been the favorite the entire season.  Michael celebrates with him happily as Austin manages a dignified but tearful goodbye.

And that concludes this season of Project Runway All-Stars!

  1. I’m happy that Mondo won since she he was so ridiculously robbed during his season, but I can’t help but feel like this entire all stars thing was a letdown. I thought everyone’s work was a downgrade from their original seasons, for whatever reason. Disappointed they only made mini collections, and with such a short amount of time to create them in! I’d rather see amazing designs from “the best of the best,” not stuff they have to quickly throw together.
