Kardashian Kollection for Plus-Size Women Causes a Stir

At first, the news of the Kardashian girls are starting a plus-size clothing line sounded great! These are women, after all, who have realistic bodies and remain sexy knockouts. They aren’t confirming to Hollywood’s boney idea of beauty.

But then I read that the new line featuring pieces ranging from size 8 to size 16. Since when is a size 8 is considered a PLUS size? And based on what I’ve seen online, I’m the only one who considers a size 8 perfectly average and healthy.

The Kardashian Kollection for Dorothy Perkins will make its debut in Britain Thursday. Kim Kardashian said, “I am really glad to be able to promote a healthy, natural body shape, eating well and exercising and appreciating the shape that you naturally have.” Which I completely agree with! But honestly, I’m having trouble getting past sizes 8 through 16 being considered “plus” sizes.

The clothes look lovely, but still look like they are more for a size 8.

The collection is launching on Thursday, Nov 8, in London stores and online.

Even with the argument that today’s size 8 is yesterdays size 10/12, that’s still not plus size. As a formerly morbidly obese (279 lbs, size 24, before gastric bypass) person, I find it highly insulting to call 8-16 plus size. It’s just another slap in the face to those who truly struggle with their weight.

I’m currently 163 lbs, size 6/8. According to “the charts” I’m still overweight, borderline obese. However, I’m stable, active and healthy. I don’t care what the “CHARTS” say.

  2. I shared this via Facebook and Tumblr because I want more people to know about this. A lot of young girls love the Kardashian girls and this is giving them the wrong message! It’s just another reason for young girls to want to be anorexic or bulimic because of what they see in the media! I wish more people would complain about this! I wish I could talk to these girls directly myself. How they can think size 8 is plus sized is beyond me. I was size 14 at my highest weight, 185lbs, and I still didn’t even shop at plus sized stores, I shopped at the same stores I shop at now! Because no one else considers 14 plus sized! Now I’m 144lbs and maybe a size 10 and I’d love to be a size 8, they’re telling me that’s plus sized??? This is TOTALLY the wrong message to send out to ladies! They don’t even know what they’re doing!

  3. First, there is nothing wrong with being plus size. I am really tired of the whole connotation that being called plus size is somehow the worst insult in the world. Healthy women come in all shapes and sizes; the amount of fat on their body does not determine their health or worth. Acting like the word has cooties does nothing for self esteem either.

That being said, size 8 is definitely a straight size and 14 is barely plus size but has been in the PS category for years. The model in the shots above is unlikely even a size 8. I think somewhere along the line someone in the media/pr confused the terms full-figure and plus size. Full-figure models tend to be in the 8-16 size range whereas plus size in the clothing industry is 14 to 24 (sometimes 26) and above that is supersize although that term is not looked at fondly either.

  4. Are you sure it’s a plus sized collection? Standard sizes in the UK are 8 – 16. Looking at the online shopping and using the US version of the site, all the items seem to be available in sizes 4 – 12.
