Chic Scents with a Purpose

Every day we are bombarded by smells.  At home. At work.  Even at the mall.  And while some are harmless, it’s a good idea to know what scents may not be serving you well and which ones actually are good for you.  Here is a quick guide to some common scents you might encounter accidentally or on purpose and their true affect on your health and mood.

  • Lemon – Generally, this light-hearted fragrance is refreshing and harmless.  It not only encourages clarity but can even help fight depression and anxiety.  When placed strategically in the home, lemon is a perfect pick-me-up scent for the dead of winter or a drab day.   The only precaution is that it can be irritating to sensitive skin, so be careful when using it in an oil burner
  • Lavender – This refreshing scent is one that simultaneously uplifts and relaxes at the same time.  It is a good choice for the bedroom, as it does promote sleep and comfort.  Experiment with different types of lavender…dried, oils, sprays.  It can be overpowering in some forms.
  • Citronella – Use  caution when burning citronella candles.  Some people may be sensitive to the fumes and scent.  Though it may have some anti-bug benefits, it could be more harmful than good to those with respiratory ailments.
  • Jasmine – This is your all-purpose feel good scent.  It decreases anxiety, depression, and even nervous exhaustion and indifference, according to aromatherapy expert, Roberta Wilson.  So, if you and your honey are fighting, this is a good one to flood your home with.
  • Appetite adjusters – If you’re trying to lose weight, stay away from these scents: Clary Sage, Coriander, Black pepper, Ginger, and Peppermint.  For appetite suppression, try these: Fennel, Patchouli, Bergamot.
  • Sexual Boost – For a little help in the love department, try an oil blend of these: Clary Sage, coriander, Ginger, Jasmine, Lavender, Neroli, Patchouli, Sandalwood,  Ylang ylang.

  1. This is such a fascinating post. I had no idea that ginger could stimulate your appetite as well as peppermint. And now I know why I love lavender so much.
