With less than a month to go in my pregnancy I seem to have stumbled into a season of bug bites, heat rash and general pregnancy growth that together combine to create the perfect storm of serious itchiness. I am have been pretty much going insane with the desire to rip my skin off and when it started to affect the precious few hours of sleep I get a night I decided I needed to find something, anything to make it stop.
I tried oatmeal baths and learned the hard way that you’re supposed to grind the oatmeal into a powder before throwing it into the water (otherwise its kinda like bathing in porridge!) and baking soda and while they worked well for a while I can’t hop into the bath whenever (or wherever) I’m hit by the evil itch. When one of my blog buddies mentioned that Aveeno make an anti-itch lotion I headed straight for the drugstore.
Unfortunately some of the Aveeno anti-itch line has hydrocortizone in it which I had been instructed by the midwife to avoid as its a topical steroid. As I was persuing the other products in the anti-itch line I discovered the Aveeno Naturals Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion with cooling menthol. Desperate I grabbed it hoping at least the menthol would help keep me cool in the heat that’s finally hit. Its FANTASTIC! A non-greasy formula with natural colloidal oatmeal, menthol and rich moisturizers it began calming the itch as soon as I applied it. Its non-scented (aside from the menthol which is obviously minty) and incredibly moisturizing. In fact my skin feels silky smooth and gorgeous after only one day of use. I bought the tube version and threw it in my purse so I can reapply whenever I need to but to be honest so far its been stopping the itch for 4 – 6 hours. The lotion is touted as being for extra dry, chafed, chapped, cracked or windburned skin but its worked well on my mosquito bites as well as my freshly shaven legs and I imagine it would feel heavenly after a long day in the sun. I honestly can’t rave about it enough!
