Project Runway Recap: Episode 2

Week two brings some smoothness around the judging as legendary designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka join the panel.  Issac has channeled some of Michael Kors in his comments and Angela Lindvall didn’t completely screw up her lines.  Maybe there is hope for a show sans Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn.  The judges are starting to meld together well.

But enough of my Tim Gunn withdrawal and onto the fashion.

This week a familiar challenge was brought to the table: Evening Couture.  A showstopping design suitable for high society events.  Austin Scarlett was positively giddy about this one.  Talk about his forte!  He was the obvious winner before the competition even began.

But as always, each challenge comes with a twist.  And this one was that a mere 24 hours was given to the designers to create a glamorous, high-end gown for a night at the opera.  None of the designers were on board with the short time period, claiming it was impossible to create a couture look without months and months of work.  Complaining got them nowhere as the clock started ticking away.

After some bickering drama over color choices, Austin shaking at the sight of Joanna Coles in the workroom and all of the designers bantering excuses about the time crunch, it was time for the runway.

[spoiler alert]

CHALLENGE WINNER: Austin of course.  Was there ever any doubt?  His execution was flawless and design channeled old Hollywood glamour.  I just wasn’t too keen on his decision to use tulle.

PERSONAL FAVORITE: Honestly I wasn’t thrilled with any of the gowns, but Michael’s caught my eye simply because the silhouette was gorgeous.  Sleek, chic and black is the perfect evening color.

SENT PACKING: Oh Sweet P.  Did you really think that a high society gal would rock this to an evening event?  I’m with Mark Badgley on this one, I think the end result resembles a dirndl skirt.  While I adored the bright melon and pattern she used, it’s better suited for lunching with girlfriends in the summertime than for attending a distinguished event.

PERSONAL WORST: I’m usually on board with Kenley because she brings that vintage vibe that I love.  I’m not seeing it here.  Rather, this looks like an episode of Sweet Sixteen gone wrong.  The entire gown swallows the model and bubblegum pink is not exactly appropriate for the opera.  In this much volume that is.

Who do you think should have won?  Been sent home?  Sound it out on Rate The Runway!
