The start of this episode was the calm before the storm. As in, you could feel the drama that was about to burst in the workroom over this challenge.
Angela called the designers to the runway and strutted out carrying eight bags. Sure that they were going to be designing a look around the bag they chose, each designer debated carefully about their selection. But, surprise! The bag had nothing to do with the challenge. It was the luggage tag inside that dictated what lay ahead for each designer: namely, what season lay ahead.
The results?
Spring: Austin & Kara
Winter: Michael & Jerell
Summer: Kenley & Mondo
Fall: Rami & Mila
This wasn’t a team challenge though – each designer was actually going head to head with their ‘partner’ to create a weekend-getaway look for the average woman.
The workroom exploded with tension and drama as Jerell accused Michael of stealing his design in a not-so-subtle way. I won’t lie and say that I didn’t see similarities between the two, but the whole debate made me cringe since really, Jerell should have been the one packing his bags last week. Where does he get off acting all high-end-designer?
To the runway!
[spoiler alert]
Being a head-to-head challenge, I’ll present the greats and not-so-greats a bit differently for this recap.
[Spring]: Austin received the low score, with good reason. The judges said they wouldn’t even go to lunch with this conservative garden girl. Kara received the high score, although somewhat by default. Her design looked comfortable, but rather plain. There was no innovation in her work.
[Summer]: Kenley rocked the ::shock:: polka dots in her one-piece summer jumper. I think it could have been cute had it not been made of what looks like pajamas. A little too girlish for me. She received the high score as the judges didn’t understand the connection between Mondo’s black and white pieces.
[Fall]: Mila took home the high score as her cape added a new silhouette to the runway. Overall her construction was poor and the rest of her outfit a bit lackluster, but the judges couldn’t see past Rami’s lime green drapped tee long enough to award him the high score. Or to even keep him one more week – as Rami was sent packaging. His jacket was impeccable though and the cobalt color was stunning, I would’ve sent Austin before him this week.
[Winter]: Drama on the runway! Jerell threw Michael under the bus (again) claiming that he stole his design. Sure, he managed to pull an Anthrologie-inspired outfit out of his hat, winning him the high score AND the title of challenge winner. Michael’s design was sleek and pulled-together.
