Spring into Pretty: HAIR

Spring is such a joyful time, and it’s certainly the ideal moment to play with your hair. Whether yours has grown out during winter months and is desperately in need of a trim, or you’re just stuck in a hair rut and not sure how to style it, read on for some fun trending tips.

Hack it Off:

Why not? Summer’s coming and this one promises to be a true blazer. If you’re not self-conscious about your bone structure or posture, you might just be ready for a cool, shorter ‘do. Nowadays there are many options between short and long, so you don’t need to enter Pixieville but you can still make a major change. A “lob,” or long bob is a chic update on a classic look and can be styled a million different ways. You’ll love that you can still pull this one into one of those cute, tiny ponies while you’re running around town. You can also add a headband, bobby pins, scarf, etc. or just blow dry it halfway, add some mousse, and hit the road. Here are some photos to bring to your stylist:

A side-swept bang makes the lob sexy and feminine a la mom-to-be Jessica Simpson.

New mom January Jones is effortlessly gorgeous in a multi-length lob that's slightly longer in the front and dried naturally with a bit of wave.

Super-chic mommy to two little girls, Jessica Alba's lob is sleek and shiny with curled-under ends for a look that works wherever her busy day takes her.

Or, just chic it up:

Sometimes, you can do a massive style revamp by simply trying out a new hair trend. Braids remain important this season. There’s no need to add the same braid to your own hair that you do your daughter’s; you can make it look grown up by doing a self-French braid on one side of your head from front to back and pulling it all into a high ponytail. Or, wear your hair parted in the middle and make one skinny braid from the front of the hair, tucked behind your ear and pinned. This sexy little 60’s throwback will have your husband weak in the knees, and might just inspire you to wear a really cute floral dress or printed maxi as you make your way through your errands checklist.

This is actually a lot easier to do than you might think. The messier, the cuter!

Isla Fisher's version is sleek and pretty; you can follow her lead or sass it up with messy waves, a pretty barrette, or however you like it.

Not into the braid idea? Bear with me. Ponytails are also having a major moment right now and were literally ALL over the spring runways. What gives? Isn’t a ponytail “boring”? No, it decidedly does not have to be anymore. And even though they only take five minutes to do, the new ponies will have you looking like you spent hours perfecting your chic factor.

Add some curls–

All you need is a large barrel curling iron and six minutes or less to perfect this runway-ready look. Slick your hair back into a high pony, leaving no scraggling strands behind. Secure with a clear elastic for Barbie-like styling. Separate the bulk of your pony into two halves and curl each one with your iron, letting two massive ringlets form. Then, gently smooth the two curled sections together creating this bouncy, part-curly pony. Affix with a heavy dose of long hold hair spray and bounce around town all day.

I love, love, love this Barbie-girl-grows-up look!

 Make it nerdy–

Okay, so maybe the glasses are overkill. But is Anne Hathaway’s nerdy-wavy-middle-parted pony not delicious? And PS. it could not be easier to do. You can even pull this one off with dirty hair after a sleepless night. Or, wash your hair and let it air dry with just a quick work-through of smoothing balm to prevent frizz. If your hair is hopelessly straight, you can add a little kink to it by creating small braids all over and letting it dry naturally for 45 minutes or so. Part your hair right down the middle like Anne’s. Then, take your waves or curls and gather them into a low, loose pony at the back of your hair, leaving one or two little strands loose at the front on either side. Tie in place with the elastic of your choice. Done!
