Fashion Friday: How to Wear a Belt

A belt will make almost anything you’re wearing look instantly more put together. Belts are also inexpensive way to try out new trends with what you already own!  If you are afraid a belt will look funny or draw unwanted attention to your waist, belting is actually a lot easier (and more flattering) than you think.

Create a tiny waist with a skinny belt: Place your belt below your rib cage but above your navel… so not exactly what you might think of as your ‘waist’ but trust me, you’ll look tinier!  Its perfect for making an oversized dress or tunic look more figure flattering. Skinny belts are your best bet here – you don’t want a huge belt that high up on your torso!

Live outside the belt loops. Did your dress come with an attached belt. Be a rebel. Cut those belt loops off – they’re probably not in the most flattering place for your shape anyway!  The belt that came with the dress probably has to go to – they are usually cheap and you can get a better look with another contrasting belt. Add a pop of color with neon or a fun print!

Belt everything: Try cinching a belt over your jacket or sweater or even a blazer! Your whole look will be more put-together. (It’s also great way to sneak a summery dress into a fall wardrobe!)

If you’re a tough size, go for a braided belt: These types of belts don’t have belt holes. You can adjust a braided belt to fit any part of you body, from waist to hips, so if you’re going to invest in one belt, this is it. You’ll get the most wear here.

Add shape with a wide belt: Wide belts are great for flowy dresses, tunics and other things that might leave you without much shape. And if you get one with a bit of shape, they’re really comfortable to wear! Remember to cinch it at the smallest part of your torso and not at your hips or you’ll look really wide. And remember – wide belts should be simple. We’re not auditioning for pro-wrestling here.
