In our kitchen, we have a recycling can right next to the trash can – its easy to just throw things right in there and recycle.
But what about the bathroom? Those shampoo bottles, body wash bottles and toilet paper rolls are recyclable, too! Many consumers don’t even realize that most products commonly used in the bathroom can be recycled. The smallest room in your house can make a BIG impact on the planet!
- 7 out of 10 Americans say they consistently recycle. However, only 1 in 5 Americans consistently recycle in the bathroom.
- Each year, Americans throw away enough 15-oz. shampoo bottles to fill 1,164 football fields—that’s more than 18,000 tons of plastic ending up in landfills!
- Most paperboard items are recyclable, including toilet paper rolls, cardboard boxes and cartons for over the counter drugs, lotions, soaps, bandages, etc.
-
Plastic bottles marked #1 (PETE) and #2 (HDPE) are recyclable in most communities. This includes shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, baby powder and oils.
-
Pill and medicine bottles are usually #1, #2 or #5 plastics, so it’s important to check the bottoms and determine what your municipality accepts
Commit to make in impact this Earth Day by recycling in the bathroom! We did last year and we’ve seen our recycle bin get fuller and our trash bin get smaller. Its wonderful! Get great tips on recycling in the bathroom on the Healthy Essentials site.
