A Solid Foundation

We all know that the most solid foundation you can have for a healthy face is the right skin care. That means removing makeup and washing at night, toning, moisturizing, and treating breakouts. And of course, sunscreen in the morning. But even the most diligent among us can find ourselves with imperfections of the skin like undereye circles, acne or other scarring, discoloration, and enlarged pores. Foundation fell out of vogue for a while but I’m so glad it’s back to help combat these skin woes and let us put our best face forward. Here are my top picks for fall.

Dior Star
The new kid on the block over at Diorskin, this all-purpose foundation goes on light but offers plenty of coverage. You won’t feel cakey or like you’re wearing a lot of makeup, but it’s perfect for combatting redness and darkness, and generally creating an even tone. There is a slightly dewy finish to this one, but skin won’t appear oily. Great for all skin types, available in 14 shades, and equipped with SPF 30. $50, Dior.com.

NARS Sheer Matte
Shinier skin types do best with an oil-free formula offering a matte finish. Especially coming off summer, this is a great angle to take as your skin calms down after sun exposure. A matte complexion is also a great base for any other beauty trends you want to dry, like strong brows, violet shadow, or a bold lip. Those with larger, visible pores will also benefit from this product — just avoid it if your skin is super-dry. NARS Sheer Matte foundation, $45, NARScosmetics.com.

MAC Full Coverage
For those of us with heavier lifting to do, look into MAC’s full coverage option. Water-resistant and developed for professional makeup artists, this formula holds firm and offers all-day, opaque coverage for even your scars, blemishes, and birth marks. This is also a great option to reach for if you have photographs on deck for the day — the more flawless your skin looks in person, the better it will translate for the camera. $32, MACcosmetics.com.

bareMinerals Original Powder
While everyone rages on about their incredible new liquid option, I’m going to stand firm on my personal obsession with the original bareMinerals powder foundation. Whether you require very light coverage or something much heavier, this is an adaptable formula you can utilize to fit your specific skin needs. The product has won numerous beauty awards with good reason. It breathes well and is easy to apply, bringing SPF 15 to the table with it. $27, BareEscentuals.com.
