Surprisingly Chic Finds for the Kiddos

As a mom-to-be in my eighth month of pregnancy, the nesting is in full effect. But when not working on my nursery or rearranging the kitchen cabinets for the ninth time in a week, I find great solace in searching the Interwebs for chic clothes I can put my little one in. Don’t get me wrong — I love cutesy, and we already own too many bows to count (yes, it’s a girl). But as a Brooklynite married to a dude born and raised in Manhattan, we need a little black in the wardrobe, too.

I’ve found it shockingly tough to find black baby duds, and I’m not saying that’s the only way to make your kid’s wardrobe cooler. But sometimes it’s not about the ruffly adorableness of what you find at the average store. To branch out, and chic-up, you might try some of my favorite discoveries.

il_570xN.559065747_c8inI love how this Etsy vendor, ScarlettBabyCA, takes traditional shapes and adds an edge. I bought this dress ($30) for my little one in black, and I think it’s awesome that it comes with a coordinated (but NOT matchy-matchy) knitted headband/snood. How cool does this kid look? The same designer makes a ton of hipster-inspired finds for little boys too, so check her out.

On the topic of Etsy, can you even stand this Love Life onesie ($15) from vendor TheKidsNextDoor? If finding black clothing for little kids is tough, finding black clothing for little kids that isn’t downright scary is even tougher. This uplifting and adorable outfit is just the thing — and I love that it’s unisex, so you can pass it along to a friend or younger sibling later.

Yes, your little dude can keep it chill without looking downright boring. This entire ensemble from Hanna Anderson is working for me, from the slouchy cap and multi-stripe sweater to the trend-right jeans and just-like-Daddy sneakers that look like boots. Shop the entire outfit here.

And for the little girl with a bit of edge, colorblock red and black jeans are a great choice. This pair features exposed zippers and faux suede for a funky finish, but are easily paired with even a simple long-sleeved tee or sweater. 7 for All Mankind skinny jeans, $89, Bloomingdales.

Whether a splurge like this is in your holiday budget or not, take note that black and navy is a divine combo on little babes. Available at Saks, this Armani Junior quilted dress ($265) is absolutely perfect for special occasions. You can recreate a similar look by pairing a simple navy dress with black tights and patent leather Mary Janes. So chic!

cn8180946A corduroy shift dress brings with it limitless possibilities and is definitely more stylish than the traditional ruffle-upon-ruffle stuff I’m seeing everywhere. Burberry makes a nice one this season, but you can also stay down here in reality with a $35 option from Gap Kids. Little boys will look sharp in an awesome denim puffer vest ($45). The only problem with these chic duds from the Gap is that you and Daddy will be jealous and want them for yourselves. Don’t worry — similar styles are happening over here for you and here for him.

Have fun — and stay chic!
