A New Twist on Tying Your Winter Scarf

Most women tie a scarf by folding the scarf in half, and pulling the two tails of the scarf through the loop. While this is certainly a great look, silkier scarves tend to unloop (or strangle you.) Here’s a new twist on this classic method that you’ll want to try!

  1. Fold your scarf in half and loop it around your neck.
  2. Instead of pulling both tails through the loop, only pull one.
  3. Below the tail you just pulled through, twist the loop once
  4. Then pull the second tail through.

So bear with me – this is my first vlog. Try and suffer through the three minutes of my babbling long enough to catch the drift of how to tie it. Because it’s pretty cool.

THANK YOU! I just tried this with my scarf that I wore to work today, and it works perfectly. I didn’t know how to avoid the problem you mentioned, which was that with the basic pull through, I wasn’t fully covered in some of my tops. Problem solved!

SO I think this is probably the most successful CC post I’ve seen since I’ve been coming here. You really struck a nerve Michelle! Apparently scarf tricks are a HOT TOPIC. lol

I am wearing one of my pashminas today like this with a v neck sweater and I am LOVING it! Thanks again!

  24. TidyMom says:

Love it Michelle!!! I’m SO going to try this! I wore a V-neck sweater with a scarf the other day and did something a little different to give me more coverage – but I like this better!!

Hey – I bought a scarf at Old Navy that was on a display – I loved the not they had, and I slowly undid it so I could see how they made it – now I don’t remember LOL – I think it was probably similar to how you tie a tie – I remember making a loop and putting one tail thru it and maybe a loop with the other tail????? ring any bells with anyone? LOL

  25. brite says:

This makes me want to pull out my scarves again- thanks!

  26. Suzanne says:

I can’t wait to wear a scarf tomorrow!

  27. Suzanne says:

Hey Trina, thanks to you and your fabulous scarf-wearing tutorial, I felt like I could actually do it and began wearing scarves! And…hope this doesn’t sound eerie…I loved your hairstyle so much that I had mine cut similar to yours. I get so many compliments for them both, so, thank you times two. :-)

  28. Susan says:

I honestly can’t remember how I ended up here, but I watched your video and first let me say that you did a GREAT job! You came across as very poised and calm, and explained everything perfectly.

And the knot? Genius! I have the same two problems you mentioned: being strangled by one’s scarf, and not having enough coverage, so this solution is much-needed. Plus i’ts so cute!

I’ll be adding you to my blogroll. Come visit me sometime at http://confessionsofasineater.blogspot.com/

    xox,
    Susan

  29. You did a great job! And I can’t wait to try this out!

  30. I LOVE this tip, thanks so much! Like you, I wear a lot of v-necks and my pashminas just don’t cover up all the neck like they should. I am going to try this one right away! I also loved the look with the last knitted scarf, it gives a whole new use for thin scarves, thanks so much!

  31. Kimba says:

Love this! I’m such a visual person that I really need the video to understand.

I had my scarf wrapped around my neck the regular way and now I’m using your new knot. I love it!!!!

  32. Kris says:

Thanks for much for showing this cool way of tying a scarf! Your points are right on as I am usually cold when wearing my scarf the same way and I wear a lot of v-neck sweaters too. Got a link to your vlog from Sweet Tea in Seattle … you were great in your vlog too!

  33. nicole says:

I tried this over the weekend and loved how it looked. I felt it was a little dressier than the way I normally wear a scarf, which was perfect for the wedding I attended. Great video!

  34. Anne says:

Love, love, love it! I’ll definitely be trying this!

  35. Emilie says:

I love that!! Thank you!! And I think you are a natural vlogger. Thanks for the great instructions. I’m freezing…. so I’m going to go try it right now. :)

  37. Sandy says:

This is my first time visiting your site and I love it! Thanks so much for posting this vlog. I have the same problems as you when wearing scarves (and I wear them EVERY day), it’s not enough coverage and I get strangled by them sometimes. I’ll be heading to Minnesota for work next week where the weather is VERY VERY cold. I will be wearing my scarves with this new knot all week long!! Thank you again!!!!!! =)

  38. Lillian says:

Just linked over from Small Notebook and I’m so glad I did! This is great – I’ve been wearing scarves like crazy and I’m so excited to have a new option. Thanks so much for the post!

    Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

  41. HeatherS says:

Excellent v-log! Love your tip, especially since I wear scarves a lot. (I’m here by way of Small Notebook.)

  42. Kristina says:

I wear a scarf nearly every day in the winter. At work (I teach), it’s always too cold to wear just my clothes, and too warm to wear the whole jacket all day. But just keeping my scarf on all day helps keep my body temp. balanced.

I’ll definitely give this new knot a try, because it’s just *that* much cuter! Thanks for sharing!

  43. rosie says:

this is awesome! i’m always cold and i hate the coverage my scarves give me. PLUS, i hate the way they look. thanks!

  44. susan hall says:

Very nice — I am a new fan and LOVED your video-blog — love that “regular” girl thing !

  45. Trisha Cupra says:

That’s awesome! I can’t believe that’s your first video. It turned out fantastic. And I love the knot. I hate how the normal knot creeps up and I’ve been tying scarves like business ties (I used to wear one with my school uniform) to stop that. This is much prettier, though. Only problem is that it’s summer here in Australia now and I have to wait till winter to try this. :)

  46. Sandhya says:

Love this – have already shown to one coworker and blogged about it. Thanks!

  47. Rachael says:

Thank you! this is my new favorite way to tie my scarfs. :-)

  48. I love this! Now I need to try it so that I don’t forget what to do. :-)

  49. Sarah says:

    Love it…so easy and cute!

  50. Lora says:

Someone noted this tip as a favourite over on sew mama sew… and I can see why. we’re all bored with that old way and you’re right, it lets the cold in at the sides!! Can’t wait until winter – as noted above – I’m also in Australia, we tried this out on a super hot summer day. Thanks for sharing. I love the blog world!!

  51. Very, very cool!

  52. Alma says:

I love it, what a great tip!

  53. Marjorie says:

What a great idea. I love it!

  54. Lori says:

Love this!! You look great — and very natural — on camera!! Athough I beg to differ . . . I don’t think it was FREEZING where you are, girl! But I’m going to use this tip . . . (just saw this post, as our friend K sent us the link on FB).

    Thanks!

  55. Francine says:

That’s an excellent way to tie a scarf! I might go ahead and try that as well. Thanks!

  56. Evelyn says:

    Dear Michelle,
This was EXACTLY what i was looking for!! Wonderfully illustrated & the perfect number of times to really -get it right. Such a pretty look too!! I will absolutely be wearing this style knot.

    Sincerely,
    Evelyn

Relish away! You did an excellent job. I especially liked how you showed what it would look like with different kinds of scarves.
