Spring 2008 Makeup Trends

**UPDATED**
The mascara I’m wearing in the pictures below is Lancome Courbe Virtuose.  The
eyeshadow is by Mary Kay.  It’s the vanilla cream to powder eye shadow
base that comes in a tube, and then the plum eye shadow powder duo.
And the black liquid liner is Mary Kay as well.  I also have penciled
in my eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil I got at Sephora, but I’m not
sure of the brand.  I wet the angle brush when I apply the plum eye
shadow as liner, and that helps it go on bolder and stay put.

Over at Musings of A Housewife, I’m fighting the frump with Fussy.  One easy way to keep current is to update your makeup.  If a total makeover is too overwhelming, pick just one aspect of your makeup routine to update.  You’ll be amazed what a difference it makes!

According to the Sephora Beauty Insider, these are three of the biggest makeup trends for spring.

1) Bright Lids — Blues and lilacs are all the rage.  This can be a daring look, but it doesn’t have to resemble Chrissy Snow.  My favorite way to wear color on my eyes is to use a cream or vanilla shimmery eye shadow on my lid and brow bone and a deep plum in the crease.  Then I take an angled brush and apply the plum to my upper and lower lash lines instead of eye liner.

Like so.

When I want drama for an evening look, I darken the plum in the crease and add a black liquid liner on the top lid.

I swear, my eye shadow looked so much darker in real life than in this picture.  And how come no one ever told me that my eyebrows are crooked?  Clearly I have no real friends in this world.

If you’re really brave, you can use blue for the smoky eye.  CARGO makes a SmokyEye Kit that is supposed to be fantastic.  I haven’t tried it, but I’ve read several positive reviews.

2) Stained Lips — Just be careful with the reds.  I sampled Stila’s Cherry Crush Lip & Cheek Stain when I was at Sephora last week, and it looked like I’d been eating a red lollipop — not exactly the sophisticated look I was going for.

On my list to try is the Laura Mercier Lip Stain.  It combines the long-wearing feature of the stain with the moisture of a gloss.  And she has a nice selection of colors to choose from.  Unfortunately it is only available online, not in Sephora stores, so I haven’t tried it.

3) Rosy Cheeks — To achieve a subtle flush, try a peachy-pink blusher such as CARGO’s SuedeBlush.  According to their packaging, the ultra sheer, lightly opalescent color gives the skin a translucent glow rather than a heavy , overly shimmery look.  I have the Montebello, and I’m loving it.  I’m actually wearing it in the above pictures, but unfortunately I cropped out my cheeks!  Ooops!

So there you go!  Three ways to update your makeup and Fight The Frump!

  1. lip stain and cheek stain… would it surprise you to know that I bought this years ago when it first came out… that brand too… but not that color…

and i loved it… i remember walking out of sephora feeling like i belonged there and then realized that i just paid $16 for lip color…

there aren’t many things that i miss about richmond, but nordstrom and sephora are two of them…they were the only places i liked to go that were a little “out of my league”

you have gorgeous eyes and i didn’t even notice the eyebrows…

  2. I have the type of skin where it seems to suck the color right off my face. Which was fine in my 20’s, but in my mid-30’s? Not so much. I HAVE to have stained colors or strong colors just to look like I have something on longer than an hour.

    Thanks for the tip!

  3. I’ve just bookmarked your site! Thank you for making some reccommendations real women can use! And your eyebrows are lovely; I always wished my eyebrows had a more dramatic tilt.

  4. I love using plum colors on my eyes. And your eyes look great!

Question for ya: I tweeze my eyebrows at home, but since I’m a righty, my left eyebrow is always a little “off.” Never can get it quite right. Any helpful hints?

  5. Um. Well. If you look real closely, you can see how I have penciled in my eyebrows where I want a little CUH-RAZY with the tweezers. So, you may not want advice from me. 😉

Honestly, I wish I’d left well enough alone and had them professionally waxed, but it’s too late now. They won’t grow back either, so eyebrow pencil it is.

Hey! Wait! That’s it – my advice. Eyebrow pencil! Pencil it in to make them even. I don’t think it’s possible to make them exactly even anyway, I know mine aren’t.

If you are still really unhappy with them, go to a professional makeup counter and ask for help. I’m sure someone there could give you some tips.

  6. You have really long eyelashes. I am envious.

And please, please mail me yor graduation photograph. I will seriously blow it up and frame it in my living room.

  7. I wish my eyebrows would quit growing back after I tweezed them! I know it happens to some people, but apparently I am doomed to having Brooke Shields eyebrows for eternity. Although hers look pretty great lately, have you noticed?

Love the plum eyeshadow with your brown eyes. How pretty! What did you decide about the mascara from a few posts ago?

  8. Wow, what I have to know now is what mascara do you use?

I’ve tried using eye shadow for liner before, and it just fades away. Any suggestions?

This is fantastic! This is SO going on my Google Reader!

  9. Your eyes look great. Could you share what colors and brand of eyeshadow you use there. It is so subtle in the picture, yet very pretty. I have green eyes and have been told that plums would be good to draw out the green in my eyes.

    thanks,
    Glory

  10. June – LMAO!!!! Then you’d be just like my mom! Every time I go home I have to look at that thing –my senior portrait, actually, with the black drape — but same hair and makeup. GAH!

Jenn – I love the mascara. I have been meaning to mention it, and I suppose this post would have been the perfect opportunity, huh? Yes, the mascara is great. I’m not sure it really curls more than my other Lancome mascara, but it does thicken and separate better than any I’ve tried. I’ll definitely be buying it again when this runs out.

  11. Ooops, I should finish reading comments before pressing POST.

Terri – I wrote about my affair with Lancome mascara in a previous post, and I swear by the stuff. I recently bought for the first time their Courbe Virtuose, and I really like it. I don’t think it really curls my lashes, but it separates, lengthens, and thickens without clumping, and even better than my old standby, the Flextencils. So I highly recommend it.

Glory – It’s Mary Kay. I’m not sure the name of the color, probably plum – but it comes in an eyeshadow duo. And the cream is their vanilla cream to powder eye shadow. That stuff I LOVE.

  12. Do they sell those eyes at Sephora? I love them!

  13. Man, that looks good…I need to get out of my shadow rut…

  14. So do you have any handy tricks on using liquid eye liner? I bought some awhile back and I can’t figure out how to put it on and not have my eyelashes in the way. I make a huge mess so back to my eyeliner pencil unless someone can enlighten me.
    Smiles!

  15. Your eyes are beautiful. Such long eyelashes!

  16. Thanks for the easy to follow and helpful advice! I love that you have pics too. I agree with everyone else that your eyes are gorgeous! Lovely colour. Keep up the great work with the site! 🙂
