Guest Blogger: Tara Thinks on Schick Intuition

Last
month I was discharged from the hospital after the birth of my third
son. Those of you who have been there remember that
formula-sponsored cheap plastic diaper bag they send you home with —
chock full of magazines, coupons, and samples. I always dutifully sift
through it because, you know, it’s free stuff. But in the past I
haven’t found much of interest. This time I found a diamond amidst the
cubic zirconiums. This Schick Intuition took up half the bag.

My mother made me wait until I was 12 to start shaving, although
I don’t remember fighting her to start earlier. Guess I somehow sensed
what a life-long commitment this would be.

It was hard and
painful — lots of nicks and full-on cuts for my little pre-teen self.
Razors sure have come a long way! I can’t imagine what they were like
for women in the early days of shaving – check out this ad from the
1920s. Doesn’t she look glamorous?

The Schick Intuituion is the biggest razor I’ve ever seen. The marketing material touts:

Schick ®
Intuition ® simplifies shaving by smoothing and soothing your skin with
every stroke. The revolutionary cartridge contains triple blades
surrounded by a unique Skin Conditioning Solid that lathers and shaves
in one easy step. So easy, in fact, there is no need for shave gel,
soap, or body wash!

And you know what? I have to agree.
This thing glides over your skin easier than a bar of soap. It was
fast, nick-free, and smooth enough for me, if not as smooth a shave as
a traditional razor (if there is such a thing anymore). One thing that
confused me was the surrounding of the blades by the skin conditioning
solid. As you use the razor, it’s only the front part of the solid that
gets used up and worn down. I’m not sure why they have to put it on the
top and sides, but what do I know?

The only serious
drawback I can find is the cost. A new razor runs about $10, with
refills almost $3 a piece. But hey — my time is worth a lot these days,
especially while I’m trying to shower with three monkey boys screaming
down the house. I think I’ll make the switch to the Intuition and save
my Venus razor for special occasions when I want a closer shave. Come
to think of it, I think I switched to the Venus after getting a free
sample at the hospital two years ago. Maybe in another two years
they’ll have coupons for laser hair removal.

  1. You make a good argument for this razor, but I think I’d still prefer to swipe my husband’s. Men’s razors, the good, heavy, all-metal ones, just seem to handle better; they’re balanced, like a good weapon or something.

I buy huge packs of replacement blades at Costco, and as long as I keep new blades on it, he never knows I’ve been “sharing.”

Maybe I just have razor envy?

  2. I love this razor… but like you, I still wonder why there is so much on the top and sides… I thought, perhaps, I was shaving wrong…

I agree with the price, it’s a bit steep, but I’ve tried other razors and I’m just not as happy with them. So I stick with the schick!

  3. I am going to give this a try! I am constantly sharing with hubby and I want my own! Thanks for the review!

  4. My wife is always borrowing my razor. Just curious — what distinguishes a feminine razor from a masculine razor? Is it just branding and marketing, or is there somerthing fundamentally different about the blades?

  5. Good question, Tom, and I have no idea. I have a feeling that it’s a brilliant marketing ploy.

    Does anyone know?

  6. They make the Venus razor with a blade that has the shave gel built in as well. I shave daily and therefore go through razors quickly. Since they are so pricey I can extend the life of the razor by using it with regular shave gel when the “fancy” stuff is gone on the razor. The Venus razor is not as bulky as the Schick Intuituion either. Hope this makes sense. It seems I can’t find the words tonight for all this technical stuff.

  7. I totally agree! I love this razor, but was also wondering why the solid gel is on the back and hardly gets used.

Like you, I discovered this razor by accident. In my case, it was when I stashed what I thought was a “normal” razor pack into my Costco cart. I have to say, I am a fan. I have a shower the size of a small phone booth, so this razor has finally made it possible for me to shave without turning off the water that would otherwise rinse my legs before I could shave them. My only advice is to keep the razor in a dry place when not in use; those pricey cartridges will last a lot longer.

  9. I love this razor too! I bought one and thought it would be a bit awkward and bulky, but I loved how smooth and luxurious it was. I also hate how expensive the cartridges can be though. I generally only use it for special occasions and store it in a dry place when I’m not using it.

  10. Nicole S says:

yea it is amazing..i love it..haha..and i doesnt take as long..living in a house with 3 other people it makes it a hole lot easier..ha..

  11. I have tried these before and they are nice for your calves and shins, but I have a horrible time with knees and down closer to my ankles with this. I don’t know if it’s because it’s so garsh-darned big or what, but I used the free one I got (when I had my baby in October) and then went back to the Daisies I usually use. I know they’re cheap but they work great and I never cut myself with them.

  12. Okay, I totally HAVE to share my secret! A woman told me of this product 10 years ago. Her only request? That I sing it’s praises to all who will listen. So, here goes. TRY THE men’s MACH 3 razor, no, not the SCHICK Quatro, the extra blade is just smoke and mirrors. I am talking the old-school tried and true MACH 3. It’s fan-tab-u-lous. I encourage you to try it and then blog about it. I know, I am just a random reading quack, but the slick, smooth, uber-quick shave of the MACH 3 has revolutionized my life.

Oh, and for the record, my last name is not Mach or anything. I just really love this razor!

    Be Blessed~
