I have recently discovered a new way to keep your face looking young and fresh!
For as long as I can remember (probably since sometime back in college, when I roamed the earth with the dinosaurs) I have worn Lancome Dual Finish Powder (which I highly recommend) in lieu of foundation. This product provides more coverage than the average powder without the yuck-factor of liquid foundation.
When I want to look my best, I usually add a bit of concealer under my eyes and on my on my cheeks and chin and wherever else I tend to have some redness and/or breakouts. In recent years, as my skin has become more and more temperamental, I have found myself applying concealer over more than half my face.
In the words of Dr. Phil, "And how is that working for you?"
Um, notsomuch.
So a few months ago, I decided it was high time to become a grownup and start wearing foundation. A trip to Sephora was in order. (Shocking, I know!)
After consulting with a very young (read: has no idea what it’s like to have 35-year-old skin) beauty consultant, I left with a Smashbox liquid foundation and Clarin’s Instant Smooth foundation primer. I was less than pleased with the results. My face felt cakey, and the heavier products made my fine lines more prominent. And I just felt too "made up" and, yes, FRUMPY.
So back to Sephora I went. (Yes, I practically live there. You wanna make something of it!? ) I came home with the sample of Dr. Brandt’s Pores No More that I reviewed a couple of weeks ago, which has been working well beneath my Lancome Dual Finish powder. I had every intention of going back to purchase Dr. Brandt’s miracle potion, but then I received a sample of You Rebel Lite tinted moisturizer in the mail.
While I had heard about tinted moisturizer in the past, I had never paid much attention to it until I got this sample of You Rebel Lite.
Here’s the description: Benefit’s You Rebel Lite is smooth complexion coverage, SPF 15
protection, and a moisturizer all in one. We’ve added antioxidants,
aloe vera, and allantoin for soft, healthy skin.
Eager to try it out, the very next morning I ripped open the package and applied it to my freshly washed face. And I absolutely LOVE the results.
It provides just enough coverage to even out my skin tone without the cakey effects of foundation. The Lancome Dual Finish works great on top of it as long as I give my skin about five minutes for the moisturizer to sink in. I feel like this combination leaves my skin looking fresh and healthy without looking overly made up.
There are only two shades, regular and lite, and this is a general complaint about the product. For me, the lite version is a great match, so I’m thrilled. It has a slight yellow tint to it, which tones down the red in my skin.
Incidentally, I also tried a sample of Perricone tinted moisturizer in their #2 tint. The color was darker than I’d like, and it went on kind of stiff. It didn’t seem to offer any more moisture than the You Rebel, even though the sales associate at Sephora said it would. If I’d liked the feel of it, I may have tried a lighter tint, but instead I went back and purchased a tube of You Rebel Lite.
I hear that Cover Girl has a good tinted moisturizer if you prefer a lower price point, but I haven’t tried it personally. If someone out there has tried it and would like to review it as a guest blogger, please let me know!

What great information! I don’t ware make up but was looking for something like this. Do you know where I can find You Rebel? Is this sort of product in the make up section or the lotion section? Thanks. 🙂
I have used Dual Finish for 15 years and love it! I will have to try the Benefit under it. Thanks for the info!
I’ve been using Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Enhancer (#20 in winter, #30 in summer). I like the lightness of the product and how it evens out my skin tone without being too heavy. A drugstore product, the ~ $10 container lasts me about 3 months.
Thanks for the info!! I have been a fan of tinted moisturizers for several years. It is just the right amount of cover.
My faves are Bobbi Brown’s and Flawless by Perscriptives.
I’ll check out the Benefit product…I’ll do anything for a trip to Sephora!!
Thanks for the information. I will check it out and see how it works for me!
Great post- I’ll have to check this out!
“Thou shalt not covet thy bloggy friends beauty products.”
If I say it enough, will it help?;)
I’ve had a heck of a time trying to find a tinted mositurizer for summer.
I’m gunna have to trust you on this and go for it when summer hits (and get the darker shade).
I’m a “WHITE” girl in the winter and I don’t want to invest in something I won’t be wearing for another 2-3 mos (at least – it is Iowa after all and tans don’t come around til early June).
I need to try something like this. I get really tired of my makeup feeling so heavy, and then before you know it, it has worn off before lunch time.
I tried the Stila tinted moisturizer and can’t decide if I like it. It’s a nice light product and it doesn’t take much, but I think it’s a little “glowy” (not sparkly and not greasy) for me and I feel like it emphasizes my lines, though it’s not supposed to. Maybe I was expecting too much.
I love Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizers, but have found that a blend of my Neutrogena base and Clinique moisturizer (the yellow bottle) lets me adjust how much coverage I want. Once my LM runs out I’ll probably just blend my own and apply over sunscreen.
I’d be happy to review the Cover Girl tinted moisturizer if you don’t ahve one already lines up. I used to be a makeup artist (with Lancome, ironically), but staying home with three kids, I don’t always get gussied up these days. Slapping on the tint is about as high falutin’ as we get, save for special occasions!
And please forgive the typos. I was nursing the baby while the 18 month old took his 3 year-old sister’s candy; suffice it to say, that spell check was not as high a priority as keeping chocolate-covered mitts off of my cream chair. 🙂
I just came across your site & really enjoy it! I make my own tinted moisturizer alot -especially in the summer time. I use mineral makeup & just mix it in with my moisturizer … that way I’m getting the moisturizer I want and the color shade I want too (my sis-in-law is in skincare though, so props to her for the idea … I didn’t think of it)!
