How To Apply Eye Cream

Want to hear something depressing?

Of course you don’t.  Who wants to hear something depressing?  Well, I’ll tell you anyway.  According to Ole Henriksen (whoever he is), "Eye cream is key in your twenties."

Well, I sure wish someone had imparted that critical piece of information before I turned 35.

I’m pretty lazy about applying eye cream.  If I think about it and have an extra 30 seconds I don’t mind sparing, I may slap some on after I remove my makeup and before I apply night cream.  But I often skip that step.

Most of my eye creams come by way of free samples.  I have yet to find one and stick to it.  But lately I have begun to notice those fine lines forming around my eyes, and I am not amused.

According to my handy-dandy Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin, and Hair from the Beauty Authority, "The eye area is the first spot on the face to show aging."  Yeah, I could have told you that.  So what do I DO about it?

You may think that you can use your regular moisturizer on your eye area, but the beauty experts say no.  Because the skin on the eye area is so much thinner than the skin on the rest of the face, eye creams are more emollient to keep that area properly moisturized.  And also, regular face creams may have ingredients that are too harsh for the sensitive eye area.

So get thee to the nearest department or drug store, and purchase yourself some eye cream.  Megan reviewed an affordable option just last week.

Here is they key to applying eye cream. Use your ring finger.  The ring finger is not as strong as your index finger and won’t pull at the sensitive eye area unnecessarily.  Dot the cream along the bone around the eyes.  Then pat gently until it dissolves into the skin.  Do not rub or tug at the skin around the eyes.  And go no closer than the bone.  The cream will seep into the skin closer to the eye as it sinks in.

Thirty seconds, and your as good as done.  You’d think we all have 30 seconds in our day to invest in preserving our skin, wouldn’t you?  When I put it that way, I wonder why eye cream hasn’t been a priority before now.

  1. My HUSBAND uses eye cream. I do not. How weird is THAT? lol I discovered my favorite facial moisterizer from him. I was out of my usual and I borrowed his. Turns out his was better. I’ve borrowed his eye cream once or twice but I can’t manage to keep it out of my eyes. And it burns. :o)

  2. Thanks for the tip! Since I’m still in my early twenties, I’ve been looking for tips for people my age (everything seems veered towards women that are fighting aging, but I’m not there yet!) and this is a great one. I’ll get a good eye cream soon, and hopefully it will become a habit. Thanks again!

  3. Every time I find an eye cream I really love it gets discontinued! That really bugs me.

  4. I’m a sucker for a good eye cream.

Yeah your eyes, the back of your hands and your decolette area (chest) age the fastest. Nice huh?
