Tame those tresses with a different kind of brush

I have always been jealous of those women with straight hair that is perfectly styled, not a hair out of place. They have long, smooth and sleek locks that shimmer in the sunlight.  Their hair bounces with each step and looks so smooth and sleek in the sunlight.

With a little help from my straightening iron I can pull off most of that look. From the bottom up you will see healthy ends, sun kissed auburn highlights playing in with my brown locks so smooth and straight.  Until you reach the top of my head.

There, on the top is a crop of baby hairs that stick straight up in the air.  The way my hair is continually falling out and growing back I sometimes wonder if I’m part dog.  At the end of every shower I find an ugly hair ball clogging up the drain.  Luckily these hairs are replaced my new ones which is a very good thing. I don’t want to be bald as a bowling ball like my daddy was.  But it does leave me with a bunch of little tiny hairs continually playing catch up with the rest of my below shoulder-length tresses.

I’ve tried attacking these baby hairs with a flat iron but their just too darn short.  I have tried smoothing them down with various frizz controlling, smoothing and shaping gels, creams, sprays and mousse.  Nothing worked.

Then one day I walked in on her, one of the women in my office building that has the coveted crown of perfect hair.  She was in the bathroom freshening up.  As I walked into the ladies room she made a brief attempt to hide what was in her hands but I saw it any way.  It was an odd combination, a toothbrush and a bottle of hairspray.  Then I think she took pity and went about her grooming routine.

She sprayed the toothbrush with hairspray over the sink then quickly brushed the hair on the very top of her head.  With the toothbrush.

The next day I scoured the bathrooms trying to find an old bottle of hairspray.  Luck was on my side as I located an old generic travel bottle of hairspray.  I ran the nozzle under scalding hot water to unclog it, sacrificed my travel toothbrush for my quest for fly-away free hair and tried it for myself.

And for the first day in my life I managed to tame those wild baby hairs without shellacking my entire head with hairspray.  I looked more put together and professional at the office and Honey could still run his fingers through my hair that evening.

The next day I tried to speed up the process by first spraying a light mist of hairspray on my hair and then quickly smooth the baby hairs into submission with my toothbrush.  Don’t do this.  It didn’t work.  You need to apply the hairspray to the toothbrush.

When you are done putting the finishing touches on your hair do rinse the toothbrush off with some hot water.  Otherwise you’ll be dealing with rock solid bristles the next morning.

This technique only takes an extra minute but is worth every second.

  2. That is so stinkin’ clever! That would even work well for my 5-year-old. She has a lot of those little hairs that need to be tamed.
