8 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Next Pedicure
- Shave your legs the day BEFORE your appointment, not the morning of.
I learned this the hard way. I was in such a hurry to shave that I gave
myself one long stripe of razor burn… and didn’t realize it until the
nail tech began the salt rub to exfoliate. Talk about excruciating. - Bring your own flip-flops.
Many of the nicer salons are happy to put the $0.99 cent "flip-flops"
on you so you don’t ruin your new polish job in sneakers, but have you
tried walking around the mall or out to your car in them? Ouch! I
always slip off of them and end up getting the bottom of my freshly
cleaned feet dirty. - Supply your own nail polish.
This might just be my best tip for making your pedicure last longer.
Don’t you hate it when the polish on the end of your big toe starts to
rub off? No worries, you have the polish in your handbag (because you
haven’t cleaned it out since 1999), so you can touch it up and have
pretty toes again. - Don’t let them put cheap polish on your toes. They are worthy of the best. If the salon doesn’t use OPI (or
an equally good equivalent) then turn around and walk out. Personally, I
am an OPI-snob. It is the only kind of polish I use. Not only do they
have fun names (like Don’t Socra-tease Me and I’m Not Really a Waitress), they also let you virtually try on the colors to see which ones best suite your skin color. - Make sure you moisturize your feet daily after your appointment. This will help you keep that nice baby’s bottom soft feeling last longer.
- Whatever you do, don’t let them take that razor to your soles!
These are dangerous and can lead to infections and actually cause
tougher skin to grow back. As a matter of fact, some states even ban
this practice. - If you find a good pedicurist, go back. At
one time, I went to the same woman for 2 years. We had a regular
appointment and it paid off. She knew I would always tip well and I
could count on getting the longest massage ever each time I went. Can
you say 20 minutes on each foot and leg?! - Get your pedicure done on a weeknight.
Salons are slower Monday – Thursday nights, and your toes will get more
focused attention. And who doesn’t want their tired tootsies to get
some extra TLC?

Sigh – I haven’t had a “real” pedicure in forever. Thanks for the tips. =)
THANK-YOU!!!!
This is great advice! I am an esthetician – I have been for 12 years, and I have never (well, except for in school) used the razor. Here in Canada, there are no regulations or licensing (don’t get me started), so it’s very important for people to understand how things work, and what could potentially be dangerous.
OPI is a good polish, but there are other great ones too! I highly recommend that you try Spa Ritual polish! The quality of OPI polish has gone down a bit in the past 5 years, but it is still very good!
very good info! Thanks.
Great information…I think I have missed a couple of the steps you recommend but you can bet I won’t on a go forward basis!
Princess – Don’t worry… I haven’t had one in several months. The idea for this post came from me fantasizing about having another one.
HauteMama – Thanks for the tip on Spa Ritual. I got into OPI several years ago and was afraid to branch out.
Sara & Debra – Glad I could help. That what blogs are all about!
