Pretty but not so plump

I have been interested in lip plumpers but not willing to spend upwards of $15 or more for lip gloss.  My penny pinching frugal relatives would be rolling in their graves if I did that.  When I discovered that the Eyes Lips Face collection has a lip plumping gloss, I had to check it out.  In case you haven’t heard about them before, the goal of Eyes Lips Face (e.l.f.) is to provide beauty products that anyone can afford, some as inexpensive as $1 per item.

e.l.f. Plumping Lip Glaze
e.l.f. Plumping Lip Glaze comes in a duel sided tube with clear gloss for power plumping on one side and tinted gloss on the other for subtle plump color.  According to their web site, it is infused with natural ingredients to produce "fresh, volume enhanced, and moisturized lips."

I had trouble picking which color I wanted to try but at this price I figured I could splurge.  I went with Plum Pout and Mauve Berry.

Both colors go nicely with my skin tone and look very pretty with a hint of sparkle.  My lips get a nice even color and shine that is on the neutral side – perfect for every day use.

The only problem is that I have to wipe it off before I eat.  There is something in the fragrance or the gloss itself that does not taste good.  I forgot this little tidbit and forgot to de-gloss my mouth before eating my mid-morning yogurt.  That first spoon tasted like it had a close encounter with the perfume ladies at some department store.  This would be a good thing if I were on a diet trying to lose weight.  Instead it was just a moment of ‘yuck’ fixed by a quick swipe with a napkin.

Now for the true test.  Would it plump my lips and get me one step closer to Angelina Jolie’s famous pout?

I went for the power plump by using both the clear and colored gloss together, applying the clear first.  As the glaze goes on you’ll feel a slight tingle on your lips almost as if you had rubbed cinnamon on them.  It wouldn’t surprise me if this is one of the natural lip enhancing ingredients because it smells a little like cinnamon or cloves or some mint mixture.

After letting the clear glaze work its magic for a minute I applied the colored gloss.  Twenty minutes later I took my after picture.  Here’s the results:

Before, without gloss au natural: Lips Before Glaze

20 minutes later with Mauve Berry: Lips After Glaze

Shiny and pretty but I don’t see any plumping action going on.  Still e.l.f. Plumping Lip Glaze is a very nice every day lip gloss at a very nice every day low price.  I think I’ll keep it.

  1. Hmmm- I have to agree. Shinny and pretty, but no visual plump.

  2. Did it hurt? Lip plumpers sting IMO. Yes I’m a wuss.

  3. Great review. Thanks for keeping it honest and using the picture was a great idea. Defnitely pretty and glossy, but I have to agree no plumpness. I’ll stick with the pout I got from Sephora’s, but I’m not telling how much I paid :-(. Thanks for trying something new for us!!

Why try for plumping? You have very pretty lips as is!

(Oh, I hope that doesn’t sound skeevy)

  5. Oh, I agree with this! I don’t like the flavor of it either. But for only $1, it was worth it!
