The Challenge of Long Hair

BadhairMy children love having long hair. My children hate brushing their hair. They also hate ME brushing their hair, which is non-negotiable if they won’t do it. This last summer ALL that changed.

My oldest daughter, age 11, invited a friend to go camping with us who ALSO had LONG hair. Only HER mom had investigated the best tool for the job. Isn’t that always the case, that until you get the best tool for the job, the job just isn’t done the best it could be? But, what if you never knew the best tool existed?

This is why, ladies, we must shop. Shop to know the best tool, shop to touch, to feel, to increase our knowledge base of the world around us. Kind of like the ancient tribal woman going to go pick fruit, which was her primary job, ya know, but I’m off on a tangent. If you ever saw the live show "Defending the Caveman," you will know exactly what I’m talking about. If you have the opportunity to see it, you will never need another marriage therapy session again. It is absolutely hilarious. Prepare to laugh until you cry.

OuchlessBack on the subject, my daughter’s friend introduced us to the NEW Goody Ouchless Brush. It is made with soft vent type bristles in a rubbery base that retracts to keep it from catching in the hair and pulling. This is truly an incredible product that has changed my girls’ attitudes towards their haircare.

I wouldn’t say they are rushing downstairs in the morning to brush their hair, and I can still make them cringe when I tackle them in a hurry. BUT, this is worth the investment, along with some good conditioner. Some would say, "Just cut their hair short." My mother-in-law would. But, I love my girlies, and I love their long hair too, so Rapunzel, here we come. We have the brush for you! Long hair is a commitment and needs love and attention.

Do you have long hair or kids with long hair? What do you do?

  1. Good question. I give you props for working with long hair. I’m always impressed by the cute styles moms can whip up.

My youngest daughter was happy to let me cut her hair to shoulder length. She poses in hats and jewelry in front the mirror for hours.

My oldest hasn’t let me take scissors to it since she was 3. She doesn’t brush it enough though so it often looks like a rat’s nest. She’s a tomboy.

I guess the day will come soon enough when how their hair looks is enough to make or break their day. Until then, I’m reluctantly letting her be messy.

  2. I have to braid my daughter’s hair every night before bed or it is so tangled we have to wash it in the morning to get the knots out. I found using conditioner helps and then comb through with a WIDE tooth comb as well. One advantage of the braiding is the curls – she loves them. Our hairdresser told us to braid it or you just keep tearing the hair by forcing a brush through. Now she brishes it out everyday be herself (and she is 6).

  3. Oh my gosh! I totally need this. Poor Zoe and I fight every morning. She has pretty short hair, but very thin and knots easily. I know how much I hated my hair being combed and can’t stand knowing I’m hurting her. I’m off to buy the brush!! Thanks for sharing!!

  4. My youngest has hair down to her behind. I use those shower combs. They work great for tangles. I also braid her hair almost every single night. The nights I don’t get a chance to, we both regret it the next day.

I will have to give this brush a chance though, I need a brush for pony tails.

  5. I re-read your post yesterday and then headed to Wal-Mart and I found the brush. A little more expensive but I had to try. We tried it first thing this morning and you know what IT WORKED. It’s a little heavier then a normal brush but there was not one tear this morning. My 5 year old even said WOW Mom that was easy.

    THANK YOU!

  6. I agree – it was pricier than I normally pay but definitely worth it! Glad it worked for you.

  7. I just bought the Goody Ouchless Hair Brush for my daughters and OMG it is wonderful! I read this post and ran out to get one. I have never heard of it before this post. My 3 year old has curly, curly hair and my 9 year old has wavy hair. I have not had one ouch from either of them since I have been using the brush and I don’t hear hair breaking. 🙂 thank you, thank you, thank you.
