Hey Y’all!
I’m just gettin’ back into the swing of things here so I don’t have a lot of products lined up to try and then review, which is where YOU come in. I need your help in selecting some products for upcoming reviews!
With cooler weather right around the proverbial corner, I’m sure I’m gonna be turnin’ on the heat in the next few weeks, and with it’ll come dry, itchy skin. Now last year I sung the praises of Eucerin’s products and their lotion DID help prevent the itchies but it didn’t completely annihilate them AND it didn’t provide itch relief once the itchies actually showed up. And since my whole family suffers with them, including my 4 year old daughter, who often wakes in the middle of the night saying, "I’m all ITCHY, Mama!" it’d be nice to have a little tool in my arsenal that WILL immediately soothe the misery and get her (thus me) back to sleep in a hurry.
So what products have YOU tried for dry, itchy winter skin? Sarna? Gold Bond products? Aveeno products? Tell me in the comments and I’ll select one or two of your suggestions and review them here.
And also, dern it, I have these horrible, dry, tough, peeling cuticles and I have yet to find a treatment for them that works consistently. Do you have a product you can suggest in that category? I’ve tried some drug store treatments that did NOTHING and long ago, when I was in my twenties, I tried one by Avon. Maybe I don’t even need a cuticle-specific product – maybe there’s some simple remedy I don’t know about that I could find under my bathroom sink.
Y’all let me know in the comments. Old Man Winter’s comin’ and you’re the only ones who can save me!
You can find Megan bloggin’ over at FriedOkra, too.

Well, I can’t say I’ve ever found a lotion type product that cured the itchies but I have found an appliance that works. Purchase a humidifier… not the kind that sits on a dresser but the large one with a filter. It makes a WORLD of a difference with dry skin. Between a humidifier and the Eucerin you can probably get through the winter without any itchies.
My sister and I have always had horrible dry skin issues- dry, flaky and itchy all summer, and dry, bright red, cracked, and painful the rest of the year. When we were little, our mom would slather an entire tube of that greasy vaseline-type Neutrogena hand cream on us after a bath. Talk about feeling sticky and greasy! Nowadays, the only lotion we can depend on for relief is Lac-Hydrin (aka AmLactin). It’s got lactic acid in it, which does tend to sting if I wait until my skin is really dry and red and scaly, but (ultimately) OH the healing relief. It’s honestly the only product I use that I would cry over were it to be discontinued.
I second the humidifier as a huge helper. We use Vaseline Intensive Care and Lubriderm mostly. They are helpful but not fantastic. Sometimes I use a little hydrocortisone for really itchy spots (for myself, not the kids).
The ABSOLUTE BEST cuticle cream in the WORLD is the shea butter nail & cuticle cream from L’Occitane. It’s a bit pricey ($18 for .52 oz), but a little goes a long way. When paired with their equally amazing shea butter hand cream, oh bliss!
I use Gold Bond–it’s the only thing that really works for me!
I get the crazy dry skin on my legs every winter (damn you, prairies!) and so far this winter, the only thing that’s worked is Curel Intensive Care. It’s the one with the red stripes on the front that claims 24-hour moisture. I don’t know if it’s 24 hours or not, but at the end of the workday my skin is still so moisturized it feels a little bit… well… gummy.
Also, the almond oil cuticle butter in the little tub from the Body Shop is awesome for winter cuticle-itis. 🙂
Well, here are my tried and true old fashioned~passed~down~from~Grandma remedies. Immediately upon finishing bathing or shower, slather on baby oil, including on the cuticles. Slather on baby oil all over feet then follow up with vaseline and put on cotton socks. Do the same for hands. . . as needed.
Done this for years and years and don’t need to purchase anything else 🙂
Blessings,
Sher
I use burt’s bees lemon butter cuticle cream, which is GREAT if used regularly, and I slather with olive oil as soon as the heat comes on or I’m cracked and itchy. Slather in the shower before toweling off.. Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Lemon oil works great too, and putting some in bath water helps keep skin soft.
Aveeno makes some intensive care hand creme that works wonders on cracked skin and cuticles. It’s unscented, so it doesn’t burn, and I love it.
I have loved Shea Butter body butter by Tree Hut. It is amazing and it smells really good. I purchase it at Wal-Mart for around $5. I wouldn’t spend a winter without it.
I second the Burt’s Bees Lemon Butter for the cuticles!!! LOVE! IT! Mine get so dry and stiff they could scratch my wood furniture, and the BB is the only thing that has ever worked for me. (I’ve tried the olive oil, baby oil, vaseline, etc. etc. etc.) Just apply before bed, and in the morning…perfect cuticles. Easy peasy!
I use baby oil gel year round. I just keep it in the shower, and slather it all over my legs while I’m still wet. The water makes it move more evenly over my skin, and the oil keeps me moisturised. I’ve done this for years.
Neutrogena’s Norwegian Formula hand cream. Rub a tiny bit into your cuticles after each washing. Give it a minute to sink in. A tube lasts me a year. It works so well that sometimes I forget I have painfully dry skin. Then I am foolish to try some other product. Ouch! Back to Neutrogena for me.
