LICE!

“Oh NOOOOOO. My kids have lice! How could they? I’m a good
mom. We are clean people.”

Guess what? It doesn’t matter. It can hit you wherever you
live and I can tell you from experience, it is not fun. Two summers ago, my
parents picked up my daughters for a month-long stay 550 miles south of my
house in their home town outside Charlotte, NC.
Two weeks into the trip, my mom calls.

“Umm, Sarah. I think the girls have lice.”

“What?!”

We had managed to avoid the outbreak at their private school,
or so we thought, and I was relieved to have my parents come get them as soon
as school ended. Either they had already gotten them or the little buggers got
on them down south somewhere. Apparently, my one daughter who hates washing her
hair had much fewer because lice actually live on clean hair better than dirty
hair.

I immediately hopped in the car, drove the day’s drive, and
spent the night cutting hair, mayonnaising and wrapping two little heads. Mayonnaise
is supposed to suffocate the bugs and rid the head of them but smells totally
disgusting and about made me gag. I can’t eat mayonnaise to this day.

After all our efforts of combing, treating and combing some
more, I found the MOST awesome product that dissolved the nits and made
cleaning the hair much easier. I found in a small pharmacy the product “No lice
or nits
.” And, I can tell you that if you need to rid your kids’ hair of lice,
this IS the product for you.

Have you had this experience? How did you handle it? (other than screaming and tearing your own hair out?)

  1. I live in Israel, and for whatever reason, lice is a big issue here as well. One thing that is VERY popular among the parents and the products that they (we) use to PREVENT lice is ROSEMARY……..many of the children’s shampoos have rosemary in it, and some parents even go so far as to coat their children’s hair with Rosemary Oil before school each morning. It has an odd smell, not quite pleasant, but not quite UNpleasant. Either way, people here swear by it!

  2. Oh boy, haven’t we all had to deal with this from one time or another? Each time a note would come home from school that “someone” in the classroom had lice, the girls all got the “treatment.”

I’m scratching my head right now just thinking about it. I did hear that a little tea-tree oil in the shampoo will kill them too.

    Blessings,

    Sher

  3. I’ll never forget the phone call from the school nurse last year. My oldest daughter and a bunch of the girls in her Brownies troop got it from the helmets when they went horseback riding. YUK. I’m so diligent about not sharing helmets and I use Tea Tree shampoo on the girls’ hair. Unfortunately they might get it again, no matter how careful I am. The ritzy private school in town has the kids go via limo to a nit picker in Brooklyn. Costly but effective.

  4. My child had lice one time. I nearly died. He has extremely blonde hair so spotting them was easy. We just used the lice shampoo and the lice comb.

  5. I was told that putting some gel or product in your child’s hair will help prevent the lice.
