They say the average woman ingests about four pounds of lipstick over the course of her lifetime.
I don't know about you, but when it comes to beauty products that I'm eventually going to be "eating," I tend to be a bit of a purist.
I prefer to skip the petrochemicals, parabens and questionable minerals in lieu of ingredients I'm familiar with and names I can pronounce.
That's why I love Burt's Bees — a company committed to creating quality, all-natural products, making them readily available, at a price everyone can afford.
And, I'm happy to report that Burt and his bees have done it again. Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer has become my new obsession and a staple in my winter makeup bag because it does double duty — providing the hydration of a lip balm and the color of a lipstick all in one convenient tube.
Made of sunflower oil, castor oil and beeswax, Lip Shimmer glides on smoothly while peppermint oil provides cooling relief for dry, chapped lips. It's the perfect product if you find you don't like the heavy feel of a lipstick or the sticky feel of gloss. I love it for everyday wear because it provides just the right amount of color without making me feel overly "done up."
Lip Shimmer comes in eleven different colors — though you may have to try a few to find just the right shade for you. (Papaya ended up being a little more pink than I anticipated. I fell in love with Nutmeg.) But, at around just $5 a tube, it's one of the best beauty bargains out there — as healthy for your pocketbook as it is for your lips.
Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer is available at a variety of mass market retailers, as well as online at www.burtsbees.com.

I agree with your enthusiasm about the concept. The first (and only) one I’ve purchased was in the watermelon shade and honestly it looked like I was a 4 year old playing dress up in my grandmother’s makeup kit. Not pretty. Unfortunately I haven’t bought any more of them, for fear that I will not have a color that looks nice on me. Any suggestions other than get over it?! ha!
I’ve been using these for about 2 years now. I think my favorite colors are coffee and watermelon. That second one is an awesome pink for a great casual everyday color.
Hey, Lydia:
You’re right — the biggest drawback about the lip shimmer is that there isn’t a tester. Everyone will have a different opinion on which color is their favorite — so there is a certain amount of trial and error involved (which, admittedly, stinks). I felt the same way about the Papaya shade as you felt about the Watermelon. For me, Nutmeg turned out to be much more neutral and worked better.
But, despite the trial and error you might have to go through, I think when you do find a color that suits you, in the end it’s a great product.
Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Michelle, thanks for the critique on this, I have really been wanting to hear if others liked it and I will definitely be buying a tube today!
I love burt’s bees products. I like the minty feel on my lips. I’m gonna have to look for the lip shimmer though because the ones I have are just flat. Thanks for letting me know it’s out there.
