Tips for choosing the right foundation color

foundation

Chances are you probably can’t wear the same shade of foundation you did when you were 20 (unless of course you are still close to 20 😉 ) and that’s because the pigment in our skin changes as we age, therefore we can’t wear the same shade.

Choosing a foundation can be very confusing, especially infront of a variety of choices. Here are a couple tips to help you out:

  • Try to match the color on the lower jawline of your face.
  • Most people wear a foundation that is too light for them (a reverse from the 80s for sure), matching your foundation to your jawline will help you get a truer color and overall tone to your face.
  • The best light to look at your foundation color on your face in light that is coming straight at you, not with light coming from above. If can’t find this type of light, find a window or step outside to see yourself in natural sunlight.
  • Foundation should never alter the color of your skin (that 80s too dark look), that’s what bronzers and cheek color is for.
  • If you buy a foundation that is too dark, you can always lighten it by mixing it with a little moisturizer.

  2. This was a great post, Darla! I never realized that the pigment of our skin changes as we age (although, now that I consider all the brown spots on my face, I suppose that makes sense!)

  3. These are great tips. I always have a hard time with foundation colors.
