I am a sucker for a good “rave” product. You know the ones – they get written up in magazines, your fav celebs claim to use them all the time, you see them with the Allure sticker of approval, and on and on and on.
Since I was born with hair thinner and limper (of course that’s a word – it means more limp) than old spaghetti, I am always on the prowl for something that will make my hair have body and bounce and life.
A few years ago, you couldn’t open a magazine without a hairstylist raving about Bumble & Bumble Thickening Spray.
All the reviews said it instantly made hair thick and bouncy and so healthy looking.
I, of course, wanted it instantly. With a $25 price tag, I just knew it held the secret to all my hair hopes and dreams. I put off buying it forever, because as a college freshman $25 could go pretty far and I was a little nervous to spend all that money in one place.
Eventually, I caved. It was delivered to my doorstep and I instantly went to the shower to wash and re-start my hair from the beginning.
And then, meh.
At first, I thought it was me. Maybe I wasn’t using the right brush or the right blow-dryer or the right technique. Maybe I wasn’t styling it correctly. Maybe I needed to use it in combination with another $25 product to get the correct results.
Or maybe it just wasn’t all that great. Maybe Bumble & Bumble had gone on a huge publicity kick with hairstylists and they lied their way right into my cabinet of goodies.
Today, 4 years later, I still have a bit of the product left. If it was a $5 product from Target you can bet it would be at the bottom of a trash can somewhere, but I just can’t throw $25 in the trash. I have been trying to use up the rest of it so I can move onto another rediculously overpriced product.
Have you ever tried (and disliked) any hyped-up product?
More importantly, do you know of any products that will make my hair thicker and more beautiful instantly?? Because I am in the market for a new product…

Sarah, I have a product that I LOVE! I talked about it on my blog a while back and thought about posting on here about it (maybe I still will)
it’s Bix Sexy Hair’s Back Comb in a bottle. Here’s my blog post from last Oct http://tidymomof2.blogspot.com/2008/10/making-life-easy.html
also the dry shampoo that I posted here about a few weeks ago makes my hair much thicker, not that I need that, but when my hair is dirty and limp, that stuff is AMAZING!!
I love that you posted about something that didn’t work. Those are good things to know! I don’t have any miracle products for you though – sorry!
Uhmmm yeah oh and how. I have 4 curly hair products in my cupboard right now – only 2 actually work. The other 2 I keep in there for days no one will see me, so I can use them up. {shakes head at self}
pureology. Everyone raved about it and I was kinda like huh? And it was an expensive huh. And I have really thin hair.
I also love that you posted about something that didn’t work! One for me:
Maybelline Great Lash mascara – I know, I know, it’s supposed to be THE BESTEST AND MOST GOODEST, etc, and all the celebrities swear by it, “It’s so cheap but it really is the best!” I fell for the hype and bought a tube. HATE. It went on like glue and gummed all my lashes together into four fat cones, then it splunged all over my face. It’s absolutely the worst mascara I’ve ever tried. 🙁
But for the fine hair thing, I am now going to go insane trying to remember this stuff I bought last year – it’s like a gel but then it suddenly turns into a mousse. I actually threw it out because it made my already-big hair too big. It wasn’t a fancy brand, I got it at a London Drugs. Dang! Maybe someone else in the comments will remember.
I went to get my hair trimmed a couple of weeks ago and asked the stylist what she recommended for natural-looking curly hair (I can’t stand the wet look, but that’s what you always get with mousse). I bought a bottle of Paul Mitchell’s “Round Trip” (curl serum) and “The Cream” (leave-in conditioner. You only use a tiny bit of each, but BOY does it make a WORLD of difference! My hair is tons thicker, feels healthier, and has lovely, natural looking curls. It’s expensive (like $15 a bottle or something) but you don’t use much at a time, so I think it’s worth it. It makes styling my hair soooo easy because I can literally hop out of the shower, put the stuff in my hair and let it air dry!
