I am a terribly scattered person. Between managing a home, changing diapers, running carpool, organizing playdates and figuring out what to make for dinner, I can look like I was run over by a Mack truck by the end of the day.
However, I have found that getting dressed in the morning makes all the difference, and here’s the one piece of clothing that will help you look like you’ve got it all under control: a denim pencil skirt.
I promise. It will change your life.
Stay with me here.
A denim skirt is comfortable to wear, even in the summer. It can take you from school, to the park and home again. It’s classic, doesn’t wrinkle and, if you choose a nice dark wash, it does a pretty good job hiding stains.
Let’s talk about length for a second, because length is key.
Option #1:

Don’t do this to yourself unless you’re 18, not my daughter and have great legs. I have three people that call me “Mommy” at home. So for me, this ship has sailed. A long time ago.
Option #2:

This skirt is too long, hits at the widest part of your calves and makes you look heavier than you are. ‘Nuff said.
Option #3:

Proportional perfection — hits right around the knee, sits just below the waist, and has a nice straight line all the way down.
It takes no more effort (in fact, it’s easier) to throw this on instead of a pair of capris or sweats. I like to add a t-shirt, light-weight cardigan and ballet flats. I’m dressed in five minutes and, though the reality is usually very different, I end up looking like I have my act somewhat together.
And, as we all know, looking the part really is half the battle.

Great post! I need to add a new denim skirt to my list. The one I have is older than the hills.
I wore one today. AND I found it at the Goodwill store for $6. It is an Ann Taylor Loft and has been my favorite staple piece this summer.
I would like a little darker one like the one you show here. very cute.
Great post!
I am moving toward skirts a little more. I have some fun summery ones that I need to loose a little to get into. What I need now are some basic denim ones. I like a little more room to move than the straight one you have pictured here.
Okay, I agree with you. 🙂
Now, you should do a post about where to find that elusive denim skirt. I’ve been searching for one “high and low”…
I am going to add this onto my ‘wardrobe wants’ list. I don’t have any denim skirts and a pencil skirt in denim is casual enough to make me comfortable and tailored enough to not look so schlumpy. I would agree with Stephanie on the comment before me….where do we find this ‘Holy Grail’ skirt??
I need a great price too…..I’m not asking for much here, am I?!!
😉
Great post!
Hey, Stephanie and Leane:
Thanks for taking the time to comment! I searched high and low for some updated examples to include. I had a hard time finding any this time of year.
But. In another month or so, you’ll start seeing them pop up when the stores start featuring the fall lines. Banana Republic had a great denim pencil skirt this spring that I was in love with. In the past, I’ve also found great denim skirts at Ann Taylor Loft, Talbots — even Old Navy. 🙂
Good luck!
i am wearing my favorite denim skirt as we speak. it is very similar to the one in the picture AND i found it at the thrift store. i think i would wear it every single day if i could. maybe it is time to get another…
i’ve also heard that larger earrings can make you look put together when you aren’t…
