MAC Paint Pot

I live under a curse. The curse of the Hooded Eyelid Syndrome, which unfortunately, runs in my family.

If you don’t have hooded eyelids, be thankful. It causes your eyeshadow to crease within hours of application. I lived with creasing eyeshadow for years until I learned of a mysterious (to me anyway) product called eyeshadow primer.

I did some research and even posted the question on Twitter for people to recommend a good one. If it could help my eyeshadow stay in place all day, I wanted some of this stuff. I heard alot about Urban Decay’s Primer Potion but even more talked about was the MAC paint pots.

Well long story short, I won a MAC eyeshadow giveaway on a blog. When I went to the MAC store to pick out my shadows, I also purchased the MAC paint pot in a color called Bare Study. It’s not marketed as a primer, but it’s what the MAC makeup artist suggested so I went with it.

I took some photos to share with you of some eyeshadow applied with and without the paint pot. Both were taken at the end of the day. They really do not do the eyeshadow justice though, it’s much prettier in person. So just pretend πŸ™‚

before, notice the crease lines

after, no crease lines

Another thing to point out is that this product is not just for the poor sufferers of Hooded Eyelid Syndrome. This product helps your eyeshadow last all day as well as prevent creasing. It can also give new life to your eyeshadows that you may have deemed too light for you as it does help intensify the color of the eyeshadow.

MAC’s paint pots retail for $16.50 and there are several colors available. I’ve been using mine for about a month now and I anticipate that it will last me several more months.

If you are leery of shelling out that much cash there are cheaper alternatives on the market. L’Oreal makes one called De-Crease, which can be picked up at just about any drugstore, but I don’t have first hand experience with how well it does the job or how long the product will last.

However, I can honestly say I am completely pleased with my MAC paint pot and when I do run out, I plan to repurchase.

  1. good pointers. too bad i dont have a creaseline at all! no lids pretty much. but i have eyeshadow primer and it helps the eyeshadow to not smear and last much longer πŸ˜€

  2. I had the same issue up until around January of this year. I found F.Y.Eye at Sephora and probably paid around $20. It’s now the end of September, and I still have half a jar left, and I use it daily. So regardless of what brand you buy, because you use such a small amount, it will last forever and is well worth the money.

  3. First, let me say you’re eyes look beautiful! Don’t focus too much on lines or you’ll drive yourself insane! Believe me, I’m 35 and I’m traveling down the overly critical path, and it’s very bumpy. I’m trying to get better…

Anyhoo… I love me some MAC stuff! I have two paint pots, one in Painterly and one is deep black. I just use the black one as eyeliner since it will wear all day long, I haven’t tried it as a primer. Perhaps one day I’ll try that out and see what an all black primer looks like! : ) But, I agree with you… those things work amazingly well. And they last for-ev-er!

  4. I love MAC….I’ve been using a primer by Clinique right now because I was in a rush and couldn’t wait until the MAC order would get here! But it works great too!

  5. I get the creaseline all the time! I started using a primer put out by BareMinerals, but everytime I use it, it seems to make my lids itchy and burn a bit. But, the product does work…maybe I just have sensative skin.

  6. Great post. I love MAC Paint Pots and my favorite is Bare Study. My skin is tan, so it gives me a champagne shimmer worn alone. Worn under other shadows, it helps to anchor the color and provides a nice base for my makeup look. Also, if you own any of the MAC loose glitters, Paint Pots are a MUST…otherwise all of the pretty sparkles just migrate down your face.

  7. I knew it was you because of those eyes before I even read who posted this! Beautiful. Great post. I think $16.50 is reasonable for something that lasts a few months – good post, Trina!

  8. Just to clarify, are you using the paint pot color as an all over base that can stand alone or are you using it as a primer to make your other shadow look good? I was using Laura Mercier Eye Basics, but they added to much shimmer for my 45-year old eyes, so I am intrigued by your post!

  9. Gorgeous!!! I agree – eyeshadow primer (of any kind) is a must!

  10. It is more obvious to me now that I need to come visit you and take you shopping with me! Very cool and it looks great. Eyeshadow intimidates me, I always feel like I am doing it wrong!! Thanks for sharing Trina!!

  11. Your eyes look great!! I’d definitely be willing to pay for that if it lasts a few months. I htink I’ll be making a trip to the mall……

  12. Will Blog For Shoes says:

Definitely on my To Try list. I used to use their little paint tubes as primer. I wonder if it’s a similar formula.

  13. Please, please, please let me know which eyeshadow you’re wearing, it is so beautiful! I have the same colour eyes and after seeing this picture of you’re eyes i want mine to look the same. Pleaseeeeeee share with me which products you’ve used on your eyes… also which mascara & eye liner are you using? Please could you email with your products… x–alaina–x@hotmail.

    Thank you πŸ™‚

  14. Hi sorry – my email address is… @hotmail.com
    Thank you πŸ˜€

Hrmm that was weird, my opinion got consumed. Anyhow I wanted to state which that’s good to understand that somebody else also mentioned this particular when i experienced difficulty choosing the exact same info somewhere else. This was the initial place in which explained the answer. Thanks.

  16. i have the same problem (hooded eyelids) my crease is even further down on my eyes, you can only see about a 2 or 3 tenths of a centemetre of my lids . i once had someone go up to me and ask if they were monolids. i used to think there were actually just “double lids” and “mono lids” googled it today to discover there are hooded eyelids too…..

which would explain why my eye makeup never works the same as my friends with “double lids”

    O.O

gotta try the paint pot as a primer…. when sephora opens in stoon, ill go and pick one up. (its that or go to edmonton, lol.
