With a background in Interior Design, I am often applying skills learned in that field to personal fashion. One of the aspects of design that I’ve always been attracted to is contrast. Whether it is through color, texture, black & white, or simple shapes, the visual stimulation brings me a sense of balance. Incorporating the same techniques to wardrobe, hair, and makeup is one way of bringing a little edge to your fashion game.
Don’t Be Washed Out, Boring, and Blah
Have you ever looked at someone (or in the mirror) and wondered why her (or your) appearance was so blah and unimpressive? Well, my answer to that question is this: there is no contrast to the picture. With no distinction between skin tone, hair, and all the details of the outfit, there is no visual interest. A good example of this is seen when really tan women or those of color wear pastel or white clothing; the contrast between their skin and the light fabric gives your eyes something to do. In the same way, a woman who wears a nice shade of red lipstick against pale, creamy skin looks stylish and even rich. Take that same lipstick and put it on a woman with a color of skin too close to the value of the lipstick…it doesn’t compliment as much. No contrast.
Recently I went from being a redhead to a being a platinum blonde. Oh yeah! It’s a HUGE change for me. I found that with the drastic color change I needed to use some different makeup techniques and colors. Because I lost the contrast between my pale skin and my hair, I had to find the variation in other ways. I’m finding that darker eye and lip makeup bring the contrast back to my face. I’m also wearing some darker colors like black and gray. Even darkening your eyebrows slightly can give an extra edge to your look. You get my point.
Mix Up the Textures
Another way to bring a rich, interesting look to your ensembles is to wear
varying fabrics and textures. If you have on a plain, solid top, try wearing it with a patterned skirt or frilly scarf. Even jewelry can give you the look I’m talking about. A chunky necklace or bracelet goes a long way to add visual interest to any outfit. You can even wear a monochromatic ensemble successfully if you have areas that have varying texture. One of this season’s best trends is funky, textured tights wore with nothing less than amazing shoes.
Have Your Own Fashion Show
Take out your favorite wardrobe pieces (including jewelry and other accessories) and lay them out on the bed. Start layering items together that give visual interest. Be creative by paring items that you haven’t previously. This exercise can literally open your eyes to some exciting new ways in which to wear your clothing. Now, try on your outfits to determine what looks good on you. Go ahead, parade around in front of the mirror! For an extra opinion, ask a trusted friend or family member what they think. Have fun with finding new ways to bring contrast to your look! Cheers!

Such great advice! I love the red lipstick on the blond in the photo above. Now, if I were to wear red, I’d look like a harlot, with my dark hair and light skin. I usually make up my eyes and go neutral on the lip.
