John Frieda’s Luxurious Volume Full Splendor Shampoo

Since the birth of my second child, my hair’s, er, VOLUME has become an issue. When I say “an issue” what I mean by that is … well, I’ll put it like this. I had a nightmare a couple of weeks ago that I was looking at pictures my mother had taken of me on our last vacation. I flipped the page of her little brag book to a picture of me from behind. “I don’t remember wearing that pink skull cap down to the beach!” I remarked.

“Skull cap?” my Mom replied, “That’s not a skull cap, Megan, that’s your head!” And then I fell out of my chair and woke up sobbing.

Yeah, so, somewhere down in my psyche, you see, I have some fear that I’m gonna be balder than a pink eraser by Christmas, and it stands to reason seeing as how I currently have about 7 hairs on my head. Unless you count my chin as part of my head, in which case, well, hey, I’m actually doin’ great! (I’m kiddin’ about the chin hairs!)

After that nightmare, I bought myself some of John Frieda’s Luxurious Volume Full Splendor Shampoo. I’d heard good things about the line and figured I’d give it a try.

This shampoo smells wonderful. I loved the scent as I washed and after my hair dried, even after using my usual conditioner and styling products, I could smell the shampoo whenever I tossed my seven hairs from side to side. Unfortunately, that’s where my enjoyment of the product stopped. After I’d shampooed and rinsed, I noticed my hair felt stripped and dry. I went on with my normal routine and found combing through my damp tresses somewhat difficult, but I pressed on. Blow-drying and styling seemed a little more laborious — my hair felt a bit sticky and wiry as I brushed through it.

Once dried, my hair DID look a tiny bit fuller, I suppose. But it also felt waxy and course, and it tended to separate into clumps as the day wore on. It looked okay, as long as I kept it brushed, but it just didn’t FEEL like my hair. I thought at first maybe I hadn’t rinsed it well enough so I tried again and rinsed FOREVER a few days later with the same results.

Not the solution I was looking for, but again, I’ve heard good things about the rest of this line, so maybe I’ll try one of the styling products and see if that works better. Anyone else tried this line?

  1. OMG! I was going to post on the Volumizing Spray next week. I LOVE it. It totally works. I’ll post about it as a follow up to this. Good to know that the shampoo is nuthin’ to write home about, though. Given my success with the blow-drying spray, I was going to try the shampoo and conditioner, although the price tag was more than I usually spend.
