Volume and Body Forever

I am perpetually bemoaning the fate of being cursed with flat, limp hair.

Despite trying every product under the sun, my hair suffers the same fate: limp, blah, boring.

I turned to my trusty BFF Twitter for help, and the result was unanimous: hot rollers.

Been there, done that, got the dang t-shirt. And what did I get in return? Rollers so heavy that they pulled and broke my thin strands right out of my head. They worked okay, but overall it seemed like I was doing a lot of roller-wrestling and not much volumizing.

Other suggestions for volume included regular foam rollers and velcro rollers. The foam ones took too much effort, while the velcro seemed to pull out as much volume as they created.

And just as I began to reach my dead-end of giving up, I saw them at the beauty supply store.

Duck Pins

The cheap metal hair clips that my hairstylist uses to get my hair off my face while she’s trying to cut it. I believe I purchased 6 of them for $3.99. Although it appears from that picture that one has already escaped.

So I bought the pins and immediately put them into my daily routine.

I part a mohawk out of my hair and get the rest of it back into a ponytail. I section off the mohawk into a few horizontal rows and curl the crown of my head (usually with a 1.25″ iron).

And then I “pin” the curls to my head.

Hair Rolls

Excuse the horrible side profile and trying-to-escape “curl rolls” – do you know how hard it is to capture a side profile of yourself?

I leave the rolls on top of my head while I finish getting my makeup on and ten minutes later I have very full, thick looking hair.

The bounce seriously lasts all day with the help of a little hairspray and I have been getting compliments left and right.

Have you ever used these “pelican” hair clips before? Is this how they are supposed to be used? They’re my new favorite hair tool – and so easy to use!

  1. Wow! I so have to try that! As you know, my hair is just like yours — very fine and tends to fall flat. I typically use velcro rollers to do something similar, but this looks pretty simple and would probably yield the same (or better) result. Thanks!

  2. Sweet Simplicity says:

I have never thought of that before. My hair is always flat. I’m going to have to try this.

  3. I wish you posted an after pic!

  4. Earlier in the week I had something called “Bobby Pin 101” with my stylist. I need to add these to my list (next to bobby pins) the next time I go to Sally’s. What a GREAT idea and awesome for thinking outside the box. I love hearing your ideas with you hair because – as you know – we have similar hair issues.

    xoxo

  5. My hair is like yours. HM. If I had longer hair, I’d try this. Clever.

  6. YES!! When my hair was longer, this is EXACTLY what I did! lol So glad you found it worked for you. MUCH easier than hot rollers 🙂
