Eyeshadow How-To

Anytime I confess to being a makeup junkie, I am asked about how to apply eyeshadow using more than just one shade of eyeshadow.

I am very far from a makeup pro but I do have 2 basic eyeshadow routines that help achieve pretty eyes using eyeshadow.

The first thing you need are eyeshadow brushes. I highly recommend Sonia Kashuk brushes from Target. I don’t even think that a specific brush is important – but I like to use 1 small brush and one larger, blending brush.

The first eye look is very simple.

I take my smaller brush and shade the outer 1/3 of my eyelid. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect.

After that, I take my lighter shade and go over the entire lid (and hiding some imperfections of the darker shade along the way).

With this look, I try and make sure that the darker shade goes “up” on the outer corners (like on the right eye in this picture). That keeps the shadow from making your eyes look smaller.

Outer Thirds Shadow

The second look is a tiny bit more complicated.

With this one, I line my eye with the darker color on the outer half of my eye. I then take a smallish brush and darken the crease of my eye. I start at the outer corners and work my way in so the color is more concentrated on the outer corners.

I then take the lighter shade and cover the rest of my lid.

Line and Crease Shadow

Neither one of these 2 shapes is super-complicated, but they definitely can make any novice look more like a pro.

Do you have a go-to eyeshadow “shape” that you like? Please share!

  1. Thanks for the advice! Love your blog Sarah & I can’t wait to try out these tricks, eye shadow has always been the hardest for me!!

  2. I like to take a light color and brush it in the arch of my eyebrow, inner corner of my eyelid and under my eye. I take a darker color and blend it into the crease. I take an accent color and outline along the very outer edge of my eye and then into the crease and the lower outer portion of my eye. Blend it all. That’s my complicated 3 color version.
I have a cream eyeshadow I just use on my lid with eyeliner for my “in a hurry” days. 🙂
So fun to see what everyone does with eyeshadow. It’s not as straight forward as it first appears.

  3. I tend to apply alot like Stacie. Mainly tho I just use two colors. A lighter for all over and then I blend a darker color into the crease, but not all the way to the inner corner, maybe 2/3 of the way in. Top it off with eyeliner and mascara and I’m done.
