You WILL be Mine, Smoky Eye.

A few weeks ago, I got a hankering for some new makeup. It’s not that I was dissatisfied with what I was using, it’s just… well, you know. We’ve all been there. I just wanted something NEW. I had some CVS ExtraCare Bucks and a few store coupons burning a hole in my pocket, plus a little extra time on my lunch break, so I hopped across the street to my local CVS and picked up some goodies.

Bargain shopping FTW!

Let’s start with the lip gloss. It was one of those L’Oreal HiP dual glosses, as you can see, and I just don’t love it. I think I tried it twice, and now I couldn’t even tell you where it is. So… a ringing endorsement, this is not.

Moving counterclockwise, let’s discuss the lipstick. I don’t normally wear lipstick (because I’m a total gloss whore. Am I allowed to say that?), but I was attracted to the color for some reason. It’s CoverGirl Continuous Color in Toasted Almond, and I seriously wear this every day. A nice matte nude – very wearable. Buy it.

Now. On to the piece de resistance. I’d wanted to try the CoverGirl SmokyShadowBlast for quite some time, but just hadn’t ponied up yet. Because, I mean, FOR REAL. Who wouldn’t want to look like Drew Barrymore?

I look just like her. Really, I do! See also: LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE.

I originally purchased the Bronze Fire duo – a nice nude base with a darker brown highlight. I liked it, and I even took pictures to show you, but because it’s so neutral that you really can’t tell I did anything special to my eye. It kind of just looked like me being drunk. (which I assure you, I was not. But still.) (I’m no fool, Internet. No WAY am I putting that on display.) I didn’t feel like I necessarily had mastered the “smoky eye,” but what the heck. It was easy to use, looked good, isn’t that all that should matter?

You may notice that I said, “originally.” Yes. I have bought this product more than once… but not really for a good reason. You see, after about 10 uses or so, the crayon part broke right off. Disappointed is an understatement, but I liked the product enough that I wanted to give it another shot. So just the other day, I bought a replacement in Purple Plum, and I even got the matching purple liner as well. I can’t say I’m super thrilled with the liner (I am spoiled by those self-sharpening ones. Any pencil I have to sharpen myself is NEVER the same, for some reason), but the colors are great. If you see them packaged in the store and think, “Huh uh. Not me! Those colors are toooo out there!” believe me when I say that they really are very sheer and wearable.

So those are my recent drugstore finds. What makeup do you buy on the cheap?

If the crayon breaks again, don’t throw it away…put it in a little container then you should still be able to apply it with your finger or a brush. I always have a few little containers that I get from Sally’s Beauty supply or something hanging around just in case a lipstick gets smushed or containers leak, etc. Another thing is if you get a pill box you can put a few shadows, lipsticks, and even a concealer in there and you have your own travel assortment of makeup.

  2. Christina, I love the idea! For me, though, part of the lure of the product is the packaging. I know that for me, personally, this wouldn’t work because I’d find something else shiny and new and forget all about my awesome travel palette. I need to get it in my head to do this, though! I would save so much money! 🙂

  3. I am so glad that you reviewed this because I keep debating buying it. I have to tell you that I love Eyes Lips Face or ELF. Their makeup is great and so super cheap. Some Target stores carry them now, but the best selection is online. I even bought a 100 eyeshadow palette for 10 dollars! I love it and every day I get to try new eyeshadows out. Alot of their items are only $1 and those that aren’t are still super cheap. Plus, they always send e-mails with discount codes on them. Totally worth the measly shipping prices too!

  4. OOO, thanks for the tip! I’ve heard a lot about ELF but have never tried. I almost bought some massive makeup kit of theirs last Christmas, but then decided at the last minute that I didn’t need to play Santa for myself anymore. 😉 I hope you like the smoky eye crayons! True confession: I stopped at Walmart this morning to buy something else, and wouldn’t you know it… another one hopped into my cart! (FYI: Walmart has a bundle pack with it and a mascara right now for only $9.88. TOTAL bargain! Target also has a 2-pack of them for I think $14. Not *as* good of a deal, but then you’d get to try two of them. Good luck!)
