I’m totally serious here. You can have the most original, swanky, talked about home without spending a fortune. Alright, I lied. You might have to swing for a six pack and a pizza. Allow me to explain.
The brilliant, very accessible way to this chic interior is called Creative Rearrangement. And, yes, I have had professional experience applying it to clients rooms, so I know CR works. Though I used to charge for this service, I’m telling you it has DIY written all over it when you follow the steps I’m about to give you.
Step One: The first thing you need to do is decide which area(s) you want to revamp and then sit down with a notebook and pen. Write out what you love about the space and what you don’t. Ask yourself how you want to feel while you’re in that room. It’s also important to write out what function it has.
Step Two: Decide what pieces of furniture and accessories you want or need to use in the room. Remove any items that will not be used by placing them in a nearby room or somewhere accessible (you might change your mind about them later). Do any needed cleaning so your palette is clear and the energy is freed up.
Step Three: Purposely move some larger pieces of furniture around by swapping them for ones in other rooms or simply rearranging them (this is where you might have to bribe your help with the beer and pizza). Once you have your basic floor plan, you can start to accessorize. Time to think outside the box! Don’t be afraid to use something for a purpose it doesn’t presently have. I’ve used countless items as end tables and garden accessories come in handy if you want something really interesting. You get the picture.
Step four: Go back to your notebook entry about how you want to feel in the space. Think about what pieces around your home make you happy (insert your own emotion) when you see them. Bring those things into the room and place them on a table. Try not to pre-judge what you think goes with the room. Throw out inner rules like, That’s my special bedroom chair, or I’ve always kept that wine rack in the kitchen. You’re creating a new space with a new feel. This is also a good time to comb through items in storage or ones that have been pushed aside in a box in the attic. There are treasures among your things, ones you may not even know you have.
Step Five: Pay particular attention to how objects relate to each other, how they compliment or distract. This is where the chic comes in, what separates the rooms with the X factor from the ones that make you yawn. It’s in your boldness and willingness to take a risk and do something that’s unexpected.
Your best friend might expect you to put up another floral print, but she wouldn’t expect you to take those six, old frames from your garage and group them together on your wall to frame nothing at all. That’s right no pictures inside those frames, no glass just wall. Try it; you might like it. It saves on Windex, too.
Step Six: Create visual rhythm in the room by choosing like items to spread throughout the space. The like I’m referring to can be color, shape, style, motif, pattern, size. The sky’s the limit. It’s your room! The best thing about this plan is it’s not set in stone. You can always change it, rearrange it, trash it, keep it, and then do it all over again when you feel like it.
You’ll be the envy of your friends. Don’t be surprised if they ask you to stop by to do their rooms. If it turns out you’re good at it, you just might have a little side job to make some extra cash for the new items you want to add to your own space.
Happy rearranging, my friends!
