{Chic} Baby Rooms

Are you as much of a control freak planner as I am?

When people ask me if I plan on finding out the sex of the baby, I laugh, as though that’s an absurd question. {It is, isn’t it?} Of course I’m going to find out what I’m having! How else will I know not to worry about picking out a girl’s name? How else will I know not to focus too much on boy’s room ideas? I want to know. We have the technology – let’s use it!

Stepping down off of my apparent soap box….

Regardless “what” I’m having, it is important to me that my baby’s room possess the following qualities:

1. Neutral, Neutral, Neutral – Not so much gender neutral as life neutral. I’m not a big fan of Lions! and Tigers! and Bears! Oh MY! I like the idea of a room being neutral enough to grow with the baby so that I don’t have to repaint and/or do a huge redecorating haul every 5 years. Who has time for that?

2. Maximum storage space – Even if you’re not working with tons of closet space, you can still turn the little nooks and crannies in the room into a great storage space. Under the crib/bed, utilizing dresser space and bookshelves, putting shelving up on the wall that is more functional than decorative {but still cute!} – anything that hides the massive amounts of toys, diapers, blocks, books, etc.

3. Crisp Cleanliness – I know this may not be a huge hit with the mommas out there, but I LOVE pops of white. I know white gets dirty easily, showing fingerprints and smudge marks, but there’s something so refreshing about the color. Whether you have white bedding, a white dresser, or a white shelf on the wall, white opens a space up and makes it feel less cluttered and chaotic. {plus, there’s nothing a little dusting can’t fix, right?}

Take a look at the rooms below:

Emily over at Jone’s Design Company is such an inspiration and I LOVE how she decorated her kid’s rooms.

The first picture is of the room her 3 sons share. The elements of it are indicative of the boys that live there, but the stripes on the wall, the curtains, and the furniture aren’t stifling in terms of design. They’ll grow with them. Notice the storage under their beds, and that lovely white dresser. It’s just wonderful.

I’m in love with little Audrey’s nursery. The color on the wall is so chic an neutral that it will work for her until she’s a teenager. I love all of the precious elements of the room that reveal that she’s a baby, but they’re all “easy fixes” as she grows older.

  1. Such cute rooms! … makes me want to have a child just so I can decorate a nursery. For that, and a million other control freak reasons, I would also find out the sex of the baby.
    Happy nursery decorating!! Keep us posted on the final results.
