I have a problem with “shapewear.” I can’t breathe. Breathing, you know, that can be kinda important.
I’ve tried on so many different kinds and they all have problems for me. First of all, anything constricting, no matter how good the brand, I find is very uncomfortable. [Maybe I have sensory integration issues.] Anything I wear on the top seems to make things squish out the bottom. Anything I wear on the bottom seems to show the squishies on top.
Here’s the conclusion I came to. If I needed only a little help to smoothe out a bump or so, shapewear might work. But really, in my situation, what I’m looking for is a bit more. Suffering through shapewear is not going to make anybody mistake me for a size 5. SO. Here’s my solution. Are you ready?
A slip.
Yes. Remember those polyester numbers your mother and grandmother used to wear?

This is a totally different approach. Instead of trying to squeeze my body in [and paying a lot of money in the process,] I am being comfy and creating a layer between the clothing and me. I love me, but there are certain parts of me that I don’t really want to display.
What these slips and camis do is keep the clothes from clinging to the body, sliding over any bumps, floating away from the body. If I want a bit of color to show under my top, I still wear one of the many body-hugging camis I own. But these are for under my knit tops and dresses, not just to hide the underwear lines, but to generally show an overall, smoother silhouette.
And like all things, the basic slip is not new and improved with a bit of lycra. Go to Sears. I’d buy from them just because they still call them “Intimates.” Gotta love it. Price is right, too:
I’m really loving Vanity Fair. And so reasonable priced! Here’s what I found at JCPenney:
Give them a try. Your mother always said a lady should wear a slip.

i needed a slip last week when i was getting dressed for a wedding – whoops! i had to borrow one from my mom! it never even crossed my mind to pack one!
Slips are wonderful, and HerRoom online is a great source for a wide variety of slips and other “intimates.” For the shapewear, try going up a size from what’s recommended for your height/weight. I find that gives me just enough control without creating extra bulges. And, it’s a lot more comfortable!
Thanks for the online tip! Unfortunately for me, going up a size or even two just doesn’t do it for me. Just. too. uncomfortable.
