Trend Watch: Complimentary Nail Polish Colors

The newest trend in nail polish colors: don’t match. Coordinate!

I’m loving the trend of choosing colors that are complimentary. Like matching the color of your purse and your shoes, matching the polish on your fingers and toes is kind of passé. It’s not necessarily a fashion no-no, but it’s more current and fashion forward to choose complimentary colors.

In the immortal words of the fashion gurus, Clinton and Stacey of TLC’s hit show, What Not To Wear, “It doesn’t have to match. It has to go.”

These colors actually came out pretty close in the end. Next time I’ll try to find colors with a bit more contrast.

You can do two shades of the same color, like I did here with the blue. Or you can do two complimentary colors — like teal and brown or sage green and coral. WHAT FUN!

How do you mix and match your nail colors?

  1. I totally agree and have been doing this for years. Quick tip: A french manicure goes with anything!

    • True, but I’m starting to feel that the French manicure looks dated. If I want to go neutral, I often use a sheer pink or nude – the same one they use for the top coat on a French manicure, but no white tips. I like that look for everyday.

  2. I always do something sheer on the fingers (Essie Ballet Slippers or the like) and something a bit bolder on my toes – usually hot pink/red/coral. I find the the lighter colors are more forgiving on the fingers when the color starts to grow out or chip.

I haven’t been brave enough to venture into blue. I wore green nail polish once in college when I was waitressing at a local restaurant and a customer told me that my nails looked like I had dipped my fingers into acid. I’ve been sticking with light pink ever since! Ha!

    • LOL. I usually do a pale sheer on my fingernails too. Or if I want a real dramatic look for evening – navy blue or grayish/black or deep deep plum. But doing something bright and fun on my fingernails is new to me. It’s really fun!

  3. I love it! What is the brand/shade of the color on your toes? 🙂
