Chlorine. UV damage. Humidity — Oh, the humidity! Just when you thought winter was bad, summer brings on an entirely different kind of hair issues. From fading color to out of control frizz, we have the tips to help you nourish and nurture your summer hair!
- Chlorine: All that chlorine sitting in your hair will not only suck out moisture, but will ravage your color. Shampoo right after you swim and follow with a good conditioning. For kids, I highly recommend L’Oreal Kids Swim & Sport Shampoo
or Suave Kids 2 in 1 Swim & Sport Shampoo
. They really work getting that nasty chlorine out of their (and your!) hair.

- UV Damage: Its hard enough to keep your color from fading, but add that intense summer sun and you’ve got a big job on your hands. Those color protecting shampoos are even more important and adding in a color-sealing treatment, like Pantene Color Nourishing Treatment, at least once a week.

- SPF for your Hair: Don’t stop at your skin! Your hair can get fried just like your nose! Extended sun exposure can leave you with dry, brittle strands. When you’re heading for a day in the sun, spritz on some SPF protection for your hair like Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil. It provides an invisible film to protect hair from UV rays up to 16 hours and minimizes loss of color, damage & dryness.
- Combat Oil: Shiny locks? Gorgeous. Greasy locks? Notsomuch. If you tend to get oily hair in the summer, add a dry shampoo to your routine. They absorb oils secreted by your scalp, keeping your roots dry. Not sure if its for you? Grab a Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo next time you’re in Target. For $3, its worth a try!
- Beat the Frizz: Again, moisture is key here. Start with a smoothing shampoo – Two of my favorites are Suave Professionals Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner (I use this every day — LOVE!) and Garnier Fructis Silk and Shine Shampoo and Conditioner. Follow with a nourishing serum like Morrocan Oil – its amazing for keeping hair well moisturized and smooth!
- When All Else Fails, Ponytail It: Add a headband to your ponytail and you can pretty much outsmart any weather! Goody has a great tutorial to try this look!
Happy Summer!
