Chic Critique :: Bat Sweater??

This is a sweater I picked up at Nordstrom Rack a few months ago without trying it on. I got it home and gave it a test drive and I was not impressed. The sleeves looked like I was about to fly away, and it just didn’t seem to be very flattering. I immediately put it back in the bag to return it.

Well, it sat and sat and sat . . .

I finally looked at the receipt and realized it was beyond its return date so I put it in my dresser.

I tried it on a couple of times and ended up putting it away without wearing it every time, but something about it keeps calling my name. That soft gray knit is just too divine to hide in a drawer.

Then last Saturday, on a whim, I tried it on again.

And I rather liked it. I think. Or maybe not. I’m not sure.

My husband says I look like a bat.

My 12-year-old son just looked at me and shook his head and snickered.

My 6-year-old daughter said I looked beautiful.

WHO should I believe??

Is it cute & stylish or walking fashion nightmare??

  1. Jo-Lynne, I love your style and I think this top looks great on you. I’ve never been one to be able to pull off this look. Most guys don’t get some of the styles out there, this being one of them. My way of deciding what stays and what goes is by what my husband thinks. I’d he thinks I look bad or silly in it, it’s a goner.

    • Thanks! I have had to learn to not take his opinion into account TOO much. He has a hard time adjusting to new looks. 😉 That said, if he thinks something is indecent, I will always defer to his judgement. But I think I’m going to try wearing this out sometime soon – casual GNO or something.

  2. Looks great! Definitely a keeper. I actually like those kind of sleeves bc they hide a multitude of sins. Not that you have sins to hide but I sure do 🙂

  3. I’m inclined to agree with the guys on this one. It’s not a very flattering shape, even if it IS on trend. If you really like the fabric, maybe you could alter this into a poncho and wear a bright-colored tank under it; otherwise, I’d say gift it or give it to Goodwill.

  4. I personally have never liked “floaty sleeve” shirts like that…the sleeves on this shirt are just TOO wide and kind of droopy to me :/

  5. Being short, it’s not a style I would have picked, but…on you, with some jewelry, I think it would work. Though those sleeves would drive me a bit loopy. Just saying.

  6. Humm… I think I would keep it for when you need to dress up but are not feeling very slim. It would be good at hiding all the right places. And with a bit of jewelry, you could really dress it up!

(for everyday wear, I think the sleeves would be annoying.)

I have almost the exact same sweater that I purchased at nordstom rack and did the same thing! I’m terrible about not trying things on when I have the kids. I finally ended up wearing it with skinny jeans, a long necklace that seemed to add some shape to it and a big cuff bracelet that I thought helped with the sleeve issue. You look cute in everything though…

  8. Hmmmm…. I think I side with the guys on this one. It seems to add bulk to your upper body…. the kind you don’t want.

I have a top very similar to this and I LOVE it! You wouldn’t think such a baggy top would be very slimming but it makes my middle look SO slim! I think the shirt looks great on you and you should wear it proud! P.S. My husband thinks mine looks silly too but I don’t care! Lol

  10. I quite like it! My hubs hardly ever gets a vote when it comes to my style. Ha!

  11. I would say believe your 6 year old — you look beautiful. There is no way you could look bulky in this top and there is nothing YOU need to hide. This is a fashion top and I say wear the hell out of it while you can because you know how fickle fashion is. When it becomes out of fashion, give it away.

  12. I think it looks great on you! The fabric seems to drape nicely around your shoulders and curves so it does not add bulk. But if YOU don’t feel great in it, feel no guilt giving it to Goodwill or a consignment store!

  13. I think it just needs a statement necklace! Accessorize!

  14. I think its very chic!
