Chic Critique: Free People Tunic Sweater

I ordered this adorable Free People tunic sweater from Gilt an a great sale. I typically wear more structured clothing, but the weave in this is so pretty (almost like ribbons) and the detailing in the shoulder area and down the sides is so . . . well . . . Free People! They do such gorgeous sweaters.

The question is . . . is it for me?

I fear it looks boxy. And it also seems to grow as I wear it.

I tried it a few different ways:

First with skinny jeans and flat metallic sandals.

Then with white straight-leg jeans and wedge sandals.

Then with dark skinny jeans and gray booties.

Finally I wore it out one night with the white jeans and brown boots.

It’s March in Philadelphia, so I didn’t want my footwear to be too summery, but I liked the contrast of blue against the white. The brown boots were a compromise — they were about the only shoes I have that are high heeled enough for these LONG white jeans. (The tan wedges really weren’t doing it for me either.)

What say you, oh wise internets?

Does the sweater stay or go? If it stays, what should I wear with it???

  1. Don’t hate me Jo-Lynne but I don’t think it flatters your shape. Love the colors but the cut of the sweater doesn’t do your cute shape justice. Sorry. 🙁

  2. I usually love your outfits. You have a very enviable figure! I am not loving this sweater on you though. It does look a tad boxy and a little matronly. Pretty color though. I always look forward to your fashion posts and your “What I Wore Wednesday” posts on the Pleated Poppy.

  3. It isn’t my favorite on you, but I like it. I like it best with the white jeans.

  4. If you have to make a decision right (you know that saying, sometime we don’t make the right decision so we have to make the decision right) – only wear it with the long white jeans.

When you first showed it on your blog I thought the same thing as you – it would look better with dark jeans and ankle boots. Sadly, wrong. White it is.

  5. I tend to agree with those who have commented. As I often say to clients…”it’s OK, but I think you can do better.” I don’t think it is your best look . I’m not saying you ALWAYS have to show your shape and enhance the waist. There is a time for longer, looser top paired with a slim jean and you have achieved that with this combo. I can’t really see the fabric details, but the sweater almost looks too “wintery” paired with the white and I say that more due to fabric than color. Typically I love white denim with most everything. That brings on the problem of what shoes and I would be struggling with that too. Maybe a wedge like the closed toe one from Tom’s would give it a lighter look and feel, yet not too summery. The sweater also screams for a long necklace! Try a few more combos and if it is just too much work and you don’t love it–it goes back!

  6. Before you give up on the sweater, may I suggest that you try it with a wide tan belt and pumps with the dark skinny jeans, also a much chunkier necklace. Instead of the pumps you could also do a cute pair of ballet flats. Also, how about an orange tank underneath instead of that grey to give it a bit of zing? Personally I don’t care for it with the white jeans, the blue/gray seems too wintery in contrast.

    • That’s an interesting remix to try! Because I was initially going to put it in the “No” pile for you.

But I am intrigued about how it would look belted. Give it a whirl. 🙂

  7. thanks, you all are great! belts don’t work on me, I am so very high waisted. I think it just needs to go back where it game from. 🙂

  8. i have a bright blue skinny belt that might look amazing with that…

  9. Have you tried belting it? I think that the way you describe the weave, this could be super-pretty in person. But like the ladies above say, your beautiful figure gets lost in the boxiness of the fit. Why not try cinching your waist with a thick brown leather belt and donning dark leggings and pumps with the sweater to elongate your legs?
