Solutions for Dry Scalp

Fall is great for wearing cozy sweaters, chic boots and sipping pumpkin lattes. But it can be rough on your hair!

Drier air means drier hair – with fun side effects like static and split ends – but for many it means an itchy annoying dry scalp. But don’t worry – its easy and inexpensive to treat!

  • Shampoo less. It really helps to limit how often you shampoo. Too-frequent shampooing can strip the scalp of moisture from its natural oils. And use only a little shampoo each time. Using too much makes it harder to rinse it all out — and any shampoo left behind dries and flakes off, making your problem worse.
  • Use the RIGHT shampoo. Especially in winter, when the air is extra dry, use a shampoo and conditioner made specifically for dry scalps. We recommend Yes to Carrots Scalp Relief Shampoo ($8). Its amazing – antibacterial tea tree oil helps stop dandruff while Cypress Oils are light-moisturizing oils that won’t weigh hair down and Organic Carrots help heal dry scalp and stimulate healthy hair. Plus, its 99% natural and free of Parabens, Petroleum and SLS so its a great solution if your kids have this issue!
  • Turn down the heat. Too much heat will dry things out more, making it even flakier. Taking long showers that are super hot can add to the problem. The same goes for overusing blow-dryers and curling irons. Instead, shower with warm (not hot) water, and let your hair dry naturally when you can. And be sure to use a protective serum when you need to heat things up.
  • Use an olive oil as a natural remedy. Rub a bit of olive oil into your scalp, wrap your hair in a towel and leave it on for about a half hour. Then rinse the oil out with lukewarm water and shampoo. (Sidebar: this was the only treatment that worked for my daughter’s cradle cap!)
