Best of Fall Denim

Anytime someone tries to tear me away from my skinny jeans, I totally freak. That said, there’s some fun new denim on the horizon this season that you might just want to test drive. For trend items, I always suggest trying out a less expensive brand first, and then if you find you reach for the item often and are enough in love with it to purchase at a higher price point a month later, go for it. But we’ll include some splurges here, too, in case you want to dive right in.

Boyfriend
If you can believe it, these are even easier to wear than skinnies — they work with everything. Roll up that cuff a bit, slap on some shoes and a top, and hit the road. I adore the styling in the above pic — a simple black tee and classic tote get a touch of class from the pointed-toe pumps. But don’t be afraid to rock a striped cashmere sweater and ballet flats, or whatever else you can get your hands on. These jeans are so comfortable, you’ll forget all about that stretch denim you love so dearly. My top pick? Gap 1969 Sexy Boyfriend Jeans, $69.50, Gap.

 70s-Inspired
High-waisted and a bit flared at the bottoms, this is a surprisingly flattering look that will conceal a tummy and make your legs look about a mile long. You don’t have to go all-out like this gal did with the floppy hat, boho blouse, and croc bag… but that’s not to say that you can’t, either!

These tend to have extra-long inseams you’ll probably want to have tailored to avoid awkward proportions. This paler wash version is a clear winner. The Cape Jean, $245. MiH Jeans.

Plain Old High-Waisted
Borrowing the flattering, high waist from the retro jeans but adding a modern twist, the new fitted jean with a nice long rise is perfect for sucking in that tummy and making you still feel like you’re in your trusted skinnies. Styling options are limitless with these jeans — just be prepared for many, many compliments.

I scored a pair at H&M at the end of last season, and am so excited to break them out once the baby weight’s (mostly) gone later this winter. You might consider splurging on this style since they’re certainly not going anywhere, any time soon. Then again, these Levi’s are only $88 and come in four great colors. Happy shopping, you denim diva!
