School has been a real struggle in our house this year. Our first grader, Colin, was diagnosed with a learning difference one year ago and is getting lots of reading and math intervention at school. He made amazing progress over the school year, but we have been really worrying about how to prevent the “summer slide?”
He is going to summer school two days a week, which is helping, but we need to supplement his learning at home. I find it easier to keep up with his reading — but I never know where to start with math! We have a few worksheets and stuff, but I just can’t come up with a whole curriculum for him over the summer!
So when I was asked to review a free math program for grade 2 students, I quickly agreed.
UMIGO – You Make It Go – is a fun, vibrant world of adventure that uses the building blocks of math to engage early elementary age kids in narrative-driven “appisodes.” UMIGO isn’t just math fact drills that kids get frustrated with or lose interest in. They have “appisodes” quickly caught and held Colin’s attention – then there are fun games to play that have math concepts and questions built right in so the kids don’t feel like they are just doing typical, boring math worksheet questions.
And the educational content is aligned with the Common Core Standards for Mathematics for first and second grades. UMIGO helps children develop the math skills they need for effective reasoning and problem solving. But all of the facts and research aside…. all I see is that my son LOVES THIS SITE.
My son – who struggles in school – is asking to play the “fun math games” and is voluntarily asking to practice his skills with UMIGO. This site has been a gift to us this summer!! If you have a child this age, check it out! You’ll be glad you did.
And don’t forget to follow UMIGO on social!
