I used to be able to make the prideful claim that my hair had never been touched with a chemical. Well, except for that one bad perm but I really do try to forget about that. Naturally wavy hair and a spiral perm do not make for good friends.
What I meant was that my dark shiny hair was my own God-given color. Then I had my first child and hit my thirties, and my hair changed. I talked a couple weeks ago about losing the shine and some “over the counter” products for that.
One thing that I find also helps keep my hair shiny is coloring it. Whether you color your own hair or pay a stylist to do it, you want the color to last for as long as possible.
Lately the big buzz to maintain color has been sulfate-free shampoos. Sulfates are the chemicals, yes chemicals, in your shampoos and shower gels that cause them to lather up. They are in pretty much in every product that you use on your body or hair. We like the lather, apparently.
They have come under fire in the last couple years because of the effect on our bodies and our environment of using them long term. Really, the findings are not good. You be the judge of that, though. I find it difficult to get rid of all of them in our household as much as I try.
Sulfates may cause shampoos to lather, but they can actually be rather drying on your hair and fade your hair color faster.
Sulfate free shampoos can be pricey, though. So, being the drugstore coupon beauty product queen that I am, I was thrilled to see L’Oreal come out with one that I could buy without taking out a small loan. EverPure Sulfate-Free Color Care System for your hair.
I got the Rosemary Juniper Moisture Shampoo and the Rosemary Mint Smooth Conditioner.
You remember how I am about hair products that smell good, right? Well, these smell really good! A little organic. A little perfume. A lot yum. The Rosemary Mint is a fresh pick-me up. Also, this shampoo does lather! It is more like a shaving foam lather, but you are definitely getting some bubbles.
I’ve been using them for about 4 weeks now. My hair was colored about 7 weeks ago and I can honestly say that my hair color still looks fresh and my hair is in good condition. It feels very soft.
My only warning is to those with fine hair like mine. Use small amounts. I find shampoos with natural botanical can often start to weigh down my hair. One way I combat this is to use a regular color care shampoo about once every 7 washes, and I don’t wash my hair every day. Skipping a day in hair washing will also help maintain hair color. If you are a mom with a child under 5 in the house, I am sure this will not be a problem.

Oooh, I may have to try that. I’d about given up on finding an affordable shampoo without sulfates. And if it smells anything like the rosemary mint that Aveda makes, I’d be in HEAVEN!
Ohh, I just saw these yesterday at Target, I think. Might have to go pick them up. I have really fine hair too – I wonder if they have a volumizing formula?
Will have to try it out – thanks for the info!
They do have a volume formula I believe.
They have quite a few products in the line for different needs.
Love it, My hair is very fine and very colored (thanks to early grays) – I will check this out.
