Spring Cleaning Can Make You Beautiful

Spring is rapidly approaching, so I think it’s time for a little Spring cleaning. Now put that dustcloth down, I’m talking about your makeup!

How often do you go through your makeup and throw things away? Did you know that old makeup can cause acne, skin irritation, and even eye infections? How long should you keep your cosmetics? I’ve seen lists all over the place with varying times. I decided to look up several of the lists and come up with one based on what I found.

Here are my recommendations:

Oil-free foundation – 1 year

Cream/Compact foundation – 18 mos.

Concealer – 1 year

Powder – 18 mos.

Blush & Bronzer – 18 mos.

Cream blush – 1 year

Powder eye shadow – 18 mos.

Cream eye shadow – 1 year

Eye liner – 18 mos.

Liquid eye liner – 6 mos.

Mascara – 3 mos.

Lipstick – 18 mos.

Lip liner – 18 mos.

Lip gloss – 1 year

OK, now print out this list and go through your cosmetics. It won’t take you that long! If you have natural cosmetics they will have shorter times and you should check with the store you purchased from. And don’t forget about your brushes – remember, Janel told you how to clean makeup brushes.

So how many items did you throw away? I want to know ’cause I’m not sure if you can beat me. I used the list and tried to be really good about it – here’s my pile of old cosmetics:

A couple of words come to mind when I see that picture: Got lipstick? I’m really not obsessed with lipstick – I promise – LOL!

Let’s see if you can do better than me with your Spring cleaning! You’ll have more space and your skin will thank you. And I have just given you a very legitimate reason to go out and buy fresh new Spring makeup – you’re welcome!

Now, don’t forget that there are still a couple of great giveaways happening on Chic Critique – hurry and enter! Megan is giving away free shoes and Mel is giving away Eyeslices!

  1. GIRL. I do believe it was HIGH TIME for you to clean out your cosmetics! MERCY! LOL. I clean mine out often because I’m just that way. I hate having stuff around that I don’t use. However, since getting freebies for Chic Critique, I am getting overrun with things that I’ve tried just a few times and discarded. I need to go thru my stuff again, I do believe. Thanks for the reminder!

  2. I have a bit of a lipstick problem myself. There are no fewer than four tubes in my purse RIGHT NOW, not counting my Rosebud Salve lip balm! I think it comes from always trying to find the “perfect shade.” I was, however, looking for an excuse to buy some new Everyday Minerals – not to justify it to myself, mind you, but to justify it to my husband. He works in catering, so he’s all about expiration dates on food – maybe this list will do the trick!

  3. Moriah @ Please Pass the Salt says:

I clean my stuff out regularly… I keep one little makeup bag and if it doesn’t fit, it gets tossed. I keep my one tube of lipstick in my purse. What can I say? I found a great color!!

  4. Oh, this is a great reminder! I feel so good when I clean out my make-up. AND I always have a ton of lipsticks and gloss, too.

Thanks for the link back to my brush cleaning post! 🙂

Oh, Moriah – you are good. I wish I could be that disciplined.

  5. Well-informative… I have to then throw all my lip glosses which i am so obssessed with…

  6. Lip gloss – ONE YEAR?

No way – you can’t have mah lip glosses….noopppppe.
