Function meets Fashion in the Summer Hat

This past weekend the sun made an appearance in New England and I took full advantage. However I also paid a painful price because I forgot to grab a hat. Although I have a head full of thick dark hair and my skin is not prone to burning for some reason my scalp will burn. So if I’m going to watch a parade on the 4th of July or hit the beach on a vacation that lies a bit closer to the equator I had better grab a hat.

When you think summer hat what comes to mind? I immediately picture some woven straw thing with a huge wide brim that will blow away with the slightest sea breeze causing me to have to put down my banana daquari and go sprinting off down the beach to catch the blasted thing. Straw hats are a very cute choice for summer but are also a bit predictable.
I’m sure that the next hat that comes to mind is the baseball cap, right? So quintessentially American and easy. I’m sure everyone has at least one baseball cap in their house. They’re perfect for hiding bad hair days under the premise of supporting your favorite sports team. You get full head coverage plus a visor capable of shading your entire face.

Perhaps you’re not a big sports fan. Or maybe you’re a bit concerned about wearing a NY Yankees cap in downtown Boston? There are plenty of choices out there. Let’s do a little virtual shopping.

Thinking about something more colorful and fashion-forward? I’d go for this brilliant floppy hat for some highly stylish head and face protection.

Fedoras are very popular among the teen and young adult crowd. I think this one would look sweet with a pair of denim shorts and a solid navy tank top.

  1. Love that last hat so much! My hubby just purchased me a pink cabbie hat that is similar and I’ve had lots of fun wearing it. I also just purchased a beret yarny type thing at a vintage shop and it has been fun to wear. I always go back to my ball caps, though. Simple girl in me I guess.

  2. I love the cabbie caps! I have a woolish-black one that I wear in the fall/winter, but don’t really have any summerish hats. I’d kinda like to find a light weight beanie or something, not to keep the sun out of my face obviously, but just because all they need are a couple braids and they make a cute casuel outfit ‘pop’! : ) However, I haven’t been able to find any that look right. Any suggestions?

  3. Anne –
How about this knit cap at Target? It looks super cute and summery to me!

  4. Now that I’m a little older (ahem), I always wear a hat in the summer sun. The main reason is to keep the sun out of my face. That first one is really cute! I have a friend who wears those cabbie hats so well — they look so effortless on her. I’ve considered investing in one, but I’m afraid it might look a little weird on me. 🙂

  5. True confessions: I’ve never worn a hat. But those are cute!
