How’s the new CoverGirl mascara? It all depends on what you’re looking for…

A while back I fell in love with a drugstore mascara.

I know. I was shocked myself.

But what can I say? CoverGirl hit a home run with its lashBlast mascara, a non-sticky formula that gives great volume and length for a third of the price of my beloved Lancome Definicils.

So — economic times being what they are — I switched. And I haven’t looked back.

But recently I had read CoverGirl was adding a new mascara to the lashBlast line. I awaited the debut with much anticipation because a) I loved the original lashBlast and b) there is always room for improvement when it comes to my lashes — which lack in both volume and length.

It seemed like forever, but eventually my local CVS received the first shipment of lashblastlength — and I was among the first eager buyers.Cover_Girl_LashBlast_Length_main

Here’s what the package says:

“Get a blast of long lashes all day! lashblastlength’s patent-pending tapered brush and nylon lengthening formula combination work together to lengthen lashes that won’t flake or smudge.”

And, I’ve got to say, the product delivers on that promise.

I love the thinner tube (which is much easier to hold and set on a counter than that fat orange one that rolls all over the place). The thinner brush is easier to maneuver, does a great job separating each lash and is effective at coating every one — even those hard-to-reach lashes on the far outer corners.

But I, personally, won’t be buying the product again.

There’s nothing wrong with the mascara — it’s just that while lashblastlength does a good job lengthening, it doesn’t do so great a job volumizing. In fact, it doesn’t volumize at all.

But, then again, it never said it would.

For those looking for a volume boost, you can combine the two mascaras. lashblastlength’s formula is very thin, allowing you to apply multiple coats without clumping. I tried applying two coats of lashblastlength and then a final coat of my regular lashBlast. The result was good. Good length and good volume. But, it was pretty much identical to the eye that had two coats of the regular lashBlast. Why use two mascaras when one will do, right?

It all comes down to what you’re looking for. If you’ve already got thick lashes and you’re just looking for length, then go snag yourself some lashblastlength right away. It’s a great formula that is easy to apply and not the least bit sticky. For around $7, it’s a drugstore bargain.

But, if you’re like me and need volume in addition to length, you’re better off sticking with the original.

lashblastlength is available at most mass market retailers and online at drugstore.com.

  1. I use the one in the purple tube… I liked it better than the orange version, especially over the fat-ness of that one’s wand. It is my favorite mascara, ever. (And I’ve used my fair share.) I think it’s lashExact.

(Didn’t like the one in the red tube, tho.)

  2. Well bummer. I almost bought this a few days ago. But I need some serious volume with my mascara, so this wouldn’t be the best for me. Thanks for saving me the trip and the money!!

  3. I have to say that your review of lashblast prompted me to run out and try it. I have never looked back. I’ve actually had a couple of people ask me what kind of mascara I used because they thought my lashes looked so good. I will most likely remain loyal to lashblast until they discontinue it. (like they always do!) Thanks for the great reviews!
