Product Review: TRESemmé Fresh Start Waterless Foam Shampoo

I try to work out regularly, but let’s be honest. Sometimes it just doesn’t happen. Some weeks I exercise every day, and some weeks I can’t muster the energy to do a single crunch.

But those weeks that I do exercise a lot, it’s always a pain to wash, blow-dry, and straighten my hair daily – not to mention the havoc all that washing and heat damage wreaks on my hair.

Enter waterless shampoo.

It seems all the fitness magazines I read rave about the wonders of waterless shampoo. So when I came across the TRESemmé Fresh Start Waterless Foam Shampoo on Alice.com, I just had to try the $4.59 miracle.

The label claimed that the shampoo would “zap oil and odor in between washes with this new dry shampoo. The unique formula gives hair a clean look and feel with gorgeous volume, even when you don’t wash.”

And it did. Kind of.

Today, instead of washing my hair, I applied several foam pumps of this waterless shampoo. It did liven up the strands and ends of my hair, but my roots remained oily. The result is a fresh-looking ponytail on what appears to be a hairsprayed and combed head of hair.

Not bad, but definitely not enough gorgeous volume to have left my hair down today.

Have any of you come across dry shampoos that add life and volume to your roots?

  1. I LOVE the Tigi Rockstar dry shampoo; it’s a miracle worker. It’s a powdery spray and it definitely pumps up the volume on my roots. I’ve never used it on the ends of my hair, so I don’t know about that. It does leave my hair drier than before using it, so I probably wouldn’t ever put it on the ends. The caveat, and it’s a big one: this stuff is pricey, about $18.75 at Ulta AND if you aren’t ultra-careful, the pressurized air will slowly leak out over time (my first can lasted 3 uses before I figured out what to do to mitigate this). But now I remove the spray nozzle after each use and listen carefully to see if I hear air–if so, then I just tap on the valve until it stops. I guess the powdery stuff gunks up the valve and it gets trapped open, maybe.

  2. Tigi Rockstar & Pssst are the way to go. Every review I’ve read of Tressame’s products is bad bad…. just not living up to the dream!

Better luck on your next try!

  3. Lea and Sarah, thanks!
Brighton Beauty Supply has the TIGI Rockaholic on sale for $13.05, and Drugstore.com has the Pssssst available for $6.99.
Sarah, is the TIGI that much better than Psssst?

  4. I’ve tried dry shampoos before with no luck at all…the best thing I can do is put some baby powder in my hair. It works wonders! It leaves my hair a bit static-y, but it’s effective.
