You probably know interior designer Thom Filicia from the hit show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and his hit show on Style Network, Dress My Nest. He’s one of House Beautiful’s Top 100 American Designers, a House & Garden International Tastemaker and an EMMY award-winner. Thom is amazingly talented and I got to ask him some design questions recently, which was great. (Because my bedroom needs help. Serious help.)
Melissa: I love how on your Style Network show, Dress My Nest, you use the everyday fashion choices women make to help them discover their interior design style. Could you explain this a bit for our readers?
Thom: Focusing on fashion and their favorite belongings helps me to get to know them, as well as create a dialogue with them in which I can learn about their style. These personal fashion items become the starting point for the design style of their new space. The result is a personalized, yet functional and fabulous space.
Melissa: What trends are you seeing in decorating in 2011?
Thom: I see a trend towards the idea of personalized interiors that are a true reflection of your personality and style through the use of interesting art and artifacts, color, texture and pattern, with a nod to classic elegance, but with a fresh and modern twist.
Melissa: The pictures in magazines and catalogs are gorgeous – but as busy moms with kids and pets (and husbands), our bedrooms hardly look like the relaxing retreats they should! What tips do you have for incorporating our families into our bedrooms, but still keeping them organized?
Thom: Through the use of photographs. A beautiful wall of your pets, family, and friends is a great way to include those you love without letting them take over your personal space.
Melissa: My bedroom is also my office – not exactly relaxing! Any ideas for helping to separate dual-use spaces?
Thom: If your bedroom is a dual-use space, such as a television room or office, I would recommend using great looking open shelving with storage boxes in order to keep all of your personal and work items organized and hidden, but easily accessible.

The basement/family room….we moved in here a little over a year ago and we’ve done nothing to it. The living room got new furniture and the old stuff got moved downstairs. It needs paint (plain white walls) and some character.

My bedroom needs serious help. The old pillow shams and comforter have faded and have stains that simply won’t wash out. We live on Social Security so replacements are not in the picture right now but I dream of a fresh, beautiful bedroom.

Every room in our house needs a makeover for looks and functionality. The room I’m most looking forward to making over is the kitchen. I have some of the tropical decor that I want to use, but I am really excited about (someday) getting new cabinets, a bar, and other elements that are going to make a huge difference not only in the setting but also in how easy it is to prepare meals.
I would love to makeover my bedroom. It just lacks just about everything — I want it to be my sanctuary, but it is a long way from it, sadly. I don’t even know where to start when it comes to making it more inviting and relaxing, ugggh. Thank you for the chance! These sets are so gorgeous!!
